China’s Taste for Chocolate
I remember chocolate in China back in the 90s - brown, waxy, disgustingly sweet and with no chocolatey flavour whatsoever. The stuff didn't even melt. But it turns out that now Chocolate, as well as a range of more 'Western' sweets and treats are becoming fashionable amongst the Chinese public, not just as tasty snacks, but as fashion statements as well.
Jelly Belly, for example, is expanding its Chinese market by developing (rather unsurprisingly) green tea and red bean flavored jelly beans.
So that's why China's going through the start of an obeisity epidemic... I remember chocolate in China back in the 90s - brown, waxy, disgustingly sweet and with no chocolatey flavour whatsoever. The stuff ... more -
Double Dangers of High Fructose Corn Syrup
Farmers receive subsidies to grow corn - much of this corn is sold to cola and other junk-food companies at a reduced rate. These companies then make high fructose corn syrup to sweeten their products. It is much cheaper to use than beet or cane sugar and can have serious negative effects on our bodies - especially the bodies of children. It's in just about any processed food you can name. As well as sweets and colas it is in bread, beer, fruit juices, frozen treats - read your labels. High fructose corn syrup is not processed by the body like sugars from fruits and vegetables - it's something we all should learn about if we value our health. Upscale M&M's Premiums come out of their shell
M&M's may be an old brand, but it is not afraid to try new things.
Mars Snackfood, which makes the candy, has changed not just one aspect of the M&M's, but everything from the formulation to the packaging, price and flavor.
"We've actually changed the recipe of M&M's as America and the world knows it," said Ryan Bowling, a spokesman for Mars Snackfood U.S. "This is a whole new recipe, both visually and to its taste as well."
The candies themselves are fatter and less uniform than traditional M&M's. More radically, these M&M's have no candy shell - just a shiny topcoat with a marbleized, almost metallic-looking finish in bright colors.
There are five flavors - mint chocolate, mocha, triple chocolate, raspberry almond and chocolate almond - sold in a 6-ounce, or 170-gram, package. Instead of lying in a rectangular brown bag, M&M's Premiums sit in an upright cardboard box with a clear window that shows off the candy.
M&M's Premiums are already on store shelves in the United States, distributed to outlets where M&M's are sold. Television spots will begin next week on major networks and popular channels in the United States.
"Even just seeing one color of an M&M helps say, 'ooh that's something different,"' said Susan Credle, executive creative director at BBDO New York, which handles M&M's advertising. M&M's may be an old brand, but it is not afraid to try new things. ... more -
Boy, 7, steals gran's cashcard, subsequently empties sweet shop
One sneaky little seven-year-old in Germany got busted for stealing his gran's cash card, then drawing out a heap of cash from the ATM after all of his mates emptied the local shop of all of its sweets.
The alarm was raised by the other kids parents and then the police apprehended the sneaky sweetie shopper.
A police spokesman said: "He could barely reach the console to type in the number.
"But he had seen that was how his gran got the cash and he just took her card and copied her. He did not know it was anything wrong."
Bless him.
