    • Florida Female Teacher Admits Sex Abuse of a Student

Jennifer Gwynn Tarkenton, 34, a teacher of educationally mentally disabled students at Greenwood Lakes Middle School in Lake Mary, Florida was arrested in Novenmber 2007 after a deputy sheriff allegedly found her and a 14-year-old boy in her car after having sex.

Tarkenton, who has since gotten married and goes by Jennifer Nero, was arrested on three counts of lewd or lascivious battery on a child 12 or older by a person over the age of 18.

Tankerton and the student were discovered in her Ford Focus on a deserted stretch of road near Lake Mary. A neighbor had called authorities, saying a suspicious vehicle was parked on the road. When a Seminole County deputy arrived, the vehicle was rocking and the windows were fogged up, according to court records.

The boy told deputies that he and Tarkenton had sex inside the vehicle 3 times after she picked him up at his house, drove to a nearby pharmacy and purchased condoms. the boy told deputies that they engaged in both oral sex and sexual intercourse.

After plea negotiations in October 2008, Jennifer Tankerton (Nero) pleaded no contest to one count of felony battery and was sentenced to five years probation. That means she will not have a record as a sex offender.
She also agreed not to live within 500 feet of a school or park, to complete a sex offender treatment program and to stay away from anyone under the age of 18, except for her son.

    • Mom accused of performing sex act on toddler son

Alicia Lee, 31, from Denver, Colorado, is charged with sexual assault on young child - her own 2-year-old son. Lee faces charges of sexual assault on a child, sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and additional charges.

Alicia Lee of Denver also took photos of herself performing oral sex on her child and then e-mailed them to a friend in April, according to an arrest affidavit. Police say Alicia Lee sent the pictures to a friend, who forwarded them to the 2-year-old boy's father. The father then called police.

According to a copy of the e-mail reported by the Rocky Mountain News, the mom told her friend in April that she thought about the sex act while changing the boy's diapers. The next day, she sent a photo of the act to a friend and said the boy giggled.

In an April 4 message, Lee wrote to her friend, "Did I tell you about my fantacy (sic) about the baby? It is weird but at times when I change his diaper I think of taking it into my mouth to see his reaction."

In a message the next day, she wrote, "DID IT!!././.He giggled a lot. I think it tickled him. I will try again tomorrow. I think if I do it enough he will get use (sic) to it."

    • British court jails mum for biting son

A mother was jailed by a British court today after biting her five-year-old son in a "revenge" attack because he had hurt his baby sister.

Asked why she did it, the 28-year-old mother-of-two said: "I don't know. Probably that he hurt his sister, so he's got to be hurt.

"It's an automatic reaction to protect your youngest. He had already had his DS (Nintendo games console) confiscated earlier this week. I feel really guilty. At the end of day it's my baby. He's my baby."

Judge Horton, jailing the woman for five months in Cheltenham, southwest England, said: "There can be few offenses more likely to cause anger and desire for retribution from the public."

"This is a case of pure anger where she appeared to have taken revenge on her own son for injury caused to the other child."

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had hopes of becoming a counselor.

Both her children have since been taken into care.

    • Would you ask a friend to be the father of your child?

A new survey has revealed that more than half of women would think about asking a friend to have children with them if the right person doesn't come along. The study found that 56% of women would consider it if they hadn't found someone by a certain age - with 28 to 31 year-olds being the most likely.

The survey shows that many single men and women are worried about meeting a true love as well as fertility issues. About half of the women who answered the Vitabiotics survey admitted that they think about finding the right partner either frequently or on a daily basis. Many also said they would settle for second-best if they didn't meet the right person.

Psychologist Linda Papadopoulos said: "Interestingly, social norms of parenting and of the conventional family structure are being challenged - no longer do we see the mum, dad and 2.4 children as the only ideal. Reconstituted families, same sex families and single parents are much more prevalent these days. And rather than ascribing to the 'norm' it seems that women and men are more flexible with their definition of 'family'."

    • Mother, 26, given months to live after misdiagnosis

A young mother has been given months to live after a hospital failed to diagnose that she had skin cancer.

Tara Jones, 26, from Wales, was given the all-clear by the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant after having a mole removed in 2005. But new tests showed it was malignant and the cancer had spread. She said it was now too late for treatment.

Ms Jones said she was hoping to live long enough to see her two children - Tyler, six, and Lowis, three - open their Christmas presents this year. "I will never see them grow up, their first day at comprehensive school, their first boyfriends and girlfriends," she said. "I am going to miss it all. It's just too unbearable to think about. Well it's heartbreaking really isn't it? I don't know how long I have got left to live through somebody else's mistake - I hope for years - but when I ask they just tell me to take my life each month as it comes."

Ms Jones said the mole had been sent away for tests and a week later she was told it was harmless. But a friend whose mother died of cancer recognised some of her symptoms and insisted she had a second opinion.

"There was a lady from the NHS and a doctor and a Macmillan nurse (who) came to the house and said the mole they had removed after the 12th of May was actually a melanoma in the first place," she said. "He (the doctor) told me there had been a terrible mistake. The mole I'd had removed in 2005 had been cancerous all along."

A spokesperson for the Welsh Assembly Government said: "We deeply regret hearing of cases like this and the minister would expect the trust to undertake an urgent inquiry into the matter."

    • Mother drowned disabled baby because she was ashamed

A 32-year-old mother drowned her four-year-old daughter in the bath because she was ashamed of the girl's disability, a court heard.

Joanne Hill was "ashamed and embarrassed" of her four-year-old daughter Naomi's condition and struggled to cope caring for the youngster, who suffered with cerebral palsy. Hill then murdered her daughter in a "determined and planned act" after her husband refused to allow the child to be adopted.

Mrs Hill allegedly planned the murder for the afternoon of November 26 last year knowing her husband Simon would not be home until 5.30pm. After picking up Naomi from the childminder she drove them to the family home in north Wales, poured herself a glass of wine then ran a bath.

The barrister, Mr Chambers, said: "When the bath was full she told Naomi she was having a bath, but Naomi didn't want one. The defendant carried her upstairs and undressed her. The defendant put her in the bath and drowned her by holding her head under the water for a long time until she was dead." After the killing, Mrs Hill dressed her daughter's body as if nothing was amiss and drove her around for eight hours, drinking several glasses of wine, before taking her to hospital claiming she was unconscious, the jury heard.

Mrs Hill, who denies murder but admits manslaughter, told police she had been suffering from suicidal thoughts before the killing and later suggested she was psychotic.
But Mr Chambers said: "She quite simply wanted Naomi dead."

The prosecution does not accept Hill's diminished responsibility defence. They claim she was not suffering from any mental problems and had not been "entirely honest" since she was arrested. Jurors heard how Mrs Hill had told doctors that she was hearing voices in her head but had later admitted making up the account.

      The trial continues.

    • Mother And Two Teen Daughters Arrested For Robbing Elderly Man Over $15 Dollars

Two teenage girls are accused of stabbing a 75-year-old man to death in a robbery that netted them $15, and police say the mother of one teen helped put them up to it. Dannette Gillespie, 38, gave knives to her 15-year-old daughter and a 19-year-old, then waited in their car, police alleged.

Dannette R. Gillespie, 38, gave knives to her 15-year-old daughter and Vanessa Anne Ocampo, 19, then waited in the car during the killing and robbery, according to a probable cause warrant. All three were charged with capital murder Friday.

Eugene Palma, a bar owner, was found at his suburban Houston home Wednesday. He did not know any of the three, Pasadena police said. Ms. Ocampo told investigators that they went to Mr. Palma's bar, from which they followed him home. Ms. Gillespie handed knives to her daughter and Ms. Ocampo and "encouraged them to commit the robbery," police said.

The daughter and Ms. Ocampo stabbed Mr. Palma several times, then searched his pockets. Ms. Ocampo took $15, according to the warrant. Ms. Gillespie allegedly waited in the back seat of the car for them and got rid of the knives.

    • From Somalia to Seattle - Immigrant Mom Stands By Community, Faith and Tradition

Asha Mohamed knew America was the place for her soon after her arrival in a Kenyan refugee camp. “They gave me two books, a Bible and a pamphlet that talked about the American Constitution.” She was familiar with the former, but found the latter “the most fascinating document that I could ever read.”

As a refugee, Mohamed was then a young teenager who had become separated from her family during a chaotic episode of Somalia’s civil strife. “Strangers took me from Mogadishu to Mombasa,” she explained, adding that she knew little of the Somali language. Coming from a somewhat privileged family, she had been educated in Italy.

In Italian schools, the study of English was mandatory and Mohamed’s most vivid impressions of America had been gleaned not from the ideals of its founders, but from the glamour and glitz of U.S. television exports. “My view of America was Dallas, Dynasty, and,” she added zestfully,
      “Wonderwoman!”

She was grateful to be eventually reunited with her family members who also had made their way to Kenya. “None of my closest relatives were harmed,” she said. After two years there, she received her parents’ permission to come to America to study to be lawyer. Though, traditionalists in many ways, they were afraid of losing their daughters to Western culture, yet cognizant of the skills needed to survive in an interdependent world. “I expected America to be this beacon of hope,” Mohamed said. Upon her arrival, she recalled being disappointed to find discrimination against women and “visible signs of racism.” There was economic shock as well.

Her legal sponsor was an aunt living in San Jose, one whose daily circumstances differed from what Mohamed had been accustomed. “In Africa, we were affluent …. We had everything on speed dial,” she said bemusedly. “My aunt said, ‘Asha, we are poor here. You need to understand that. ’” Mohamed did not. “I didn’t want to accept the reality that she lived.” She thought her aunt had “settled” for a lower socio-economic status; that she had “given up.” Reflecting, Mohamed said she realizes, “I was judgmental.” She knew little of the financial challenges of working class Americans.

In all her youthful naiveté, Mohamed too was still a product of a conservative Muslim culture. She said she chose to stand, like most Somali women, “by your community, by your faith, by your traditions.” She got married at 19. Her husband found a job in Seattle. “I wanted to go to New York .… He fell in love with the Emerald City.”

Now a mother of three, Mohamed is a counselor for the Seattle Housing Authority. She is also a community organizer, and a fervent immigrants’ and human rights activist at CURE – Coalition to Undo Racism Everywhere. She is looking forward to her role as a delegate to the Equal Voice for America’s Families town hall meeting in Los Angeles on Sept. 6. “We’re bringing 400 people from Seattle, 600 from the state,” she said energetically, prayerful that from within her group will emerge some who will help comprise “the next generation of critical thinkers.” Underwritten by the Marguerite Casey Foundation, there will be two other concurrent town halls in Birmingham and Chicago, respectively. The three-city event is expected to attract nearly 15,000 people, many of whom will have attended local and regional town halls 2007-2008.

    • Golden retriever adopts tiger cubs

CANEY, Kan. (AP) — A dog at a southeast Kansas zoo has adopted three tiger cubs abandoned by their mother. Safari Zoological Park owner Tom Harvey said the tiger cubs were born Sunday, but the mother had problems with them.

A day later, the mother stopped caring for them. Harvey said the cubs were wandering around, trying to find their birth mother, who wouldn't pay attention to them. That's when the cubs were put in the care of a golden retriever, Harvey said.

Harvey said it's unusual for dogs to care for tiger cubs, but it does happen. He said he has seen reports of pigs nursing cubs in China, and he actually got the golden retriever after his wife saw television accounts of dogs caring for tiger cubs.

Puppies take about the same amount of time as tiger cubs to develop, and Harvey said the adoptive mother just recently weaned her own puppies.

"The timing couldn't have been any better," he said.

The mother doesn't know the difference, Harvey said. He said the adopted mother licks, cleans and feeds the cubs.

The Safari Zoological Park is a licensed facility open since 1989 and specializes in endangered species.

It has leopards, lions, cougars, baboons, ring-tailed lemurs, bears and other animals. It currently has seven white tigers and two orange tigers.

Because whit tigers are inbred from the first specimen found more than a half-century ago, they are not as genetically stable as orange tigers.

The zoo's previous litter of white tiger cubs was born April 23, although one of the three has since gone to a private zoo near Oklahoma City.

    • The Way Mothers Interact With Babies In First Year Predicts Child Behavior To Age ...

ScienceDaily (June 24, 2008) — The way mothers interact with their babies in the first year of life is strongly related to how children behave later on. Both a mother’s parenting style and an infant’s temperament reliably predict challenging behavior in later childhood, according to Benjamin Lahey and his team from the University of Chicago in the US.

The researchers looked at whether an infant’s temperament and his mother’s parenting skills during the first year of life might predict behavioral problems, in just over 1,800 children aged 4-13 years. Measures of infant temperament included activity levels, how fearful, predictable and fussy the babies were, as well as whether they had a generally happy disposition.

The researchers looked at how much mothers stimulated their baby intellectually, how responsive they were to the child’s demands, and the use of spanking or physical restraint. Child conduct problems in later childhood included cheating, telling lies, trouble getting on with teachers, being disobedient at home and/or at school, bullying and showing no remorse after misbehaving.

The results indicate that both maternal ratings of their infants' temperament and parenting styles during the first year are surprisingly good predictors of maternal ratings of child conduct problems through age 13 years. Less fussy, more predictable infants, as well as those who were more intellectually stimulated by their mothers in their first year of life, were at low risk of later childhood conduct problems. Early spanking also predicted challenging behavior in Non-Hispanic European American families, but not in Hispanic families.

According to the authors, these findings support the hypothesis that “interventions focusing on parenting during the first year of life would be beneficial in preventing future child conduct problems…Greater emphasis should be placed on increasing maternal cognitive stimulation of infants in such early intervention programs, taking child temperament into consideration.”
