    • Drawn Together

      Poems of promise, lines of love and inches of inspiration line the sidewalks of downtown St. Petersburg, Fla. Next to them are drawings of flowers, hearts and crosses; greeting city dwellers, businessmen and tourist.

      The author behind the pastel caulk drawings was a mystery to local resident Terry Lee Getz, an office worker and artist, until a newspaper article clued her in to his identity.

      Thus began a nearly two year search for him that would find her a new purpose in life, and for Jacob, the homeless artist, a new beginning.

    • Life Line

      Henri Foronda can't imagine a day away from the beach. He doesn't like the idea of going on vacation because being away from the beach would make him a fish out of water.

      Fishing, to him, is "paradise."

      The 14-year-old takes trips to the Gulf with his dad who taught him how to fish. It has become their bonding activity, and brings them closer every day.

    • The friendship waltz

      On a warm Sunday evening in downtown Gulfport, Fla., the sound of a clarinet flows out the front doors of the Gulfport Casino Ballroom. A crowd of nearly 100 people fills the old casino’s walls. The crowd ranges in age and ethnicity, but they find common ground through their love of ballroom dancing. For one St. Pete couple, this love connects them both on and off the dance floor. • City Council wants to revamp noise ordinance standards

      By Cristina Silva, Times Staff Writer
      In print: Wednesday, June 11, 2008;

      Noise at locations such as Jannus Landing, an open-air venue in downtown St. Petersburg, is now measured using sound level meters. The City Council wants to switch to a plainly audible standard.

      ST. PETERSBURG — Faced with growing complaints about boisterous patrons, the blare of music concerts and thumping nightclubs, the City Council is considering revamping its noise ordinance.

      The city wants to switch from using sound level meters to regulate noise to a plainly audible standard. That means police officers would have the authority to determine what "too loud" means.

    • A well dressed, young white girl and a man named Jimmy

      In the city of St. Petersburg, Florida, there has been an unwritten law about poor treatment towards the homeless. Last year, the city had police officers slash and toss a tent city where many within the city limits were congregating.

      That being said, the link takes you to a story of Amy and her chance encounter and conversation with a man named Jimmy. This is the anti-thesis of some very self-absorbed blogging I had seen last year by other local bloggers on their encounters with the homeless.

      I really don't know what else to say, the story just moved me and I wanted to share it with others. An open mind and an open heart seems to be rare these days in my neck fo the woods and it's refreshing to see when someone can be open and caring for others down on their luck.
