Cloning cells to fight cancer
A man is cancer free after having his cloned defensive cancer cells injected into his body. I never liked the idea of cloning whole animals, etc., but cloning individual cells to fight disease sounds like a good step towards eliminating cancer. Clay Shirky just blew my mind
You must read this speech transcript from NYU social software expert Clay Shirky. It is, no joke, the most interesting thing I've read yet in 2008. Not interesting in the "oh wow I didn't know whales had a freaky whale-language" way... interesting in the "oh wow EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE" way.

Artificial Intelligence 2.0
Daphne Koller, a researcher at Stanford whose work has led to advances in artificial intelligence, sees the world as a web of probabilities.
A mathematical theoretician, she has made contributions in areas like robotics and biology. Her biggest accomplishment — and at age 39, she is expected to make more — is creating a set of computational tools for artificial intelligence that can be used by scientists and engineers to do things like predict traffic jams, improve machine vision and understand the way cancer spreads.
Ms. Koller is part of a revival of interest in artificial intelligence. After three decades of disappointments, artificial intelligence researchers are making progress. Recent developments made possible spam filters, Microsoft’s new ClearFlow traffic maps and the driverless robotic cars that Stanford teams have built for competitions sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
Ms. Koller is beginning to apply her algorithms more generally to help scientists discern patterns in vast collections of data. Daphne Koller, a researcher at Stanford whose work has led to advances in artificial intelligence, sees the world as a web of probabil... more -

SFIFF: Spotlight: Kinotek, Sunday, May 4th
The 20 short videos in this program run quickly between intensely complicated structures and achingly beautiful abstractions. These works use computers and software design as a bridge between traditional media like film and sculpture. Each of these animated works, presenting finely crafted visions and sounds, is an example of “generative art.” The term defines artistic production generated through algorithms or other computational processes. In essence, an animator, engineer, designer or group produces parameters within which particular works materialize randomly. It is as if the artist produced her own counterpart—the artist she wishes existed—and had her make the video you will watch in this program. Another unique aspect of generative work is that the media produced through specific virtual algorithms or processes can in many cases vary wildly. The algorithms that generate the videos could just as easily make sculptures, music, drawings, paintings or poems the form of the finished works. In this program, SFIFF will present single-channel video work only. The bulk of the program was assembled by Lia and Miguel Carvalhais for a Generative Art program presented at the 2006 Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria. Three other works were taken from the forthcoming DVD Advanced Beauty, assembled by Matt Pyke of Universal Everything and Freeform.

Tim Robbins controversial NAB speech
Here are the last six minutes of actor Tim Robbins controversial NAB speech. NAB organizers ordered the cameras off, due to a no filming clause, however the audio recorders remained on. I would urge you listen to this now- before it disappears.
Despite being urged by an audience of hundreds of radio and television executives to “give the speech,” Robbins didn’t hesitate to bite the hand of the media. He said the radio industry had been on the way to creating a single “national playlist” before XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio came along, and he criticized other national media for not relentlessly pursuing what he carefully but clearly implied were lies of the current president, George W. Bush, in the relentless fashion they went after his predecessor, Bill Clinton, for his sexual dalliance with an intern.
He also called on the industry to turn back from a kind of reporting that reduces the variety of voices being delivered on any given issue and distracts the public with excessive reporting about starlets stepping out of cars with no panties on. Such news takes “no energy" and requires little thought, he said.

Apple's branding makes you more creative?
A new study suggests that just looking at the Apple logo might have an impact on people's creativity. Participants were shown the Apple logo for an imperceptible fraction of a second, then asked to think of as many uses for a brick as possible. They came up with 30 percent more uses than other participants who were shown the IBM logo.
I'm sure it's not conclusive evidence, but what the heck, here's the Apple logo. Gaze into it. Now go. Be creative.
