    • Judge halts aerial spraying against moth in Santa Cruz County

And this is why I love the bay area, once in awhile you feel like sanity might prevail after all. For anyone who hasn't been following this, the last time they sprayed, over 600 people reported feeling ill.

(04-24) 13:05 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- A judge today ordered aerial spraying in Santa Cruz County against the light brown apple moth be halted until the state conducts a comprehensive environmental review of the impacts.
It was not immediately clear how Burdick's ruling would affect plans to spray in the Bay Area or in Monterey. Environmentalists have filed a similar suit in Monterey County Superior Court.

Critics of the spraying have voiced strong opposition to the aerial spraying plan after hundreds of residents in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties reported respiratory problems last autumn that they contend were linked to the first round of spraying against the light brown apple moth.

A 32-page report that state health officials released earlier this month said they were unable to determine a link between the spraying and respiratory problems, saying the complaints were not detailed enough or consistent.

    • Will the California Pesticide Spraying Help or Harm?

The pesticides scheduled for spraying all over the Bay Area and other parts of California this summer and fall is said to be harmless to humans and other animals, and yet some people in counties already sprayed have reported respiratory problems and asthmatic symptoms.

This article says that the pesticides will consist mosly of "pheromones" - a sort of birth control for the reproductive cycle of the moths in question.

So will this help or harm humans? Will our breathing of fresh air be compromised?

    • The worlds largest moth

This is the Atlas moth, and it lives around South East Asia and China. With a 65 square inch wingspan it's the worlds biggest moth. And what's even more interesting is that it doesn't have fully developed mouth parts so it can't ever feed. Instead it just lives off the fat reserves that it builds up whilst still in a laval state over its tiny life span of 1-2 weeks.

I guess some creatures pulled the short straw when the genes were getting handed out...

    • You will be sprayed with pesticide unless you speak up.

Asthma and flu-like symptoms have occurred in people already sprayed, and who knows what else in the short and long term. This is an undocumented, untested chemical that interferes with the light brown apple moth's ability to reproduce. And what about humans reproductive and lung and skin health?

Santa Cruz and Monterey County residential areas are scheduled to be aerial sprayed beginning June 1, 2008, and again every 30 to 90 days. San Francisco, Daly City, Colma, Oakland, Piedmont, Emeryville, Albany, El Cerrito, El Sobrante, Tiburon and Belvedere residential areas are scheduled to be aerial sprayed on August 1, 2008, and again every 30 to 90 days.
