Female British aid worker gunned down as Taliban ambush kills four in Afghanistan
A British woman was among four aid workers killed on Wednesday when their vehicle was ambushed by Islamic militants in Afghanistan.
Dr Jacqueline Kirk, said to be of British-Canadian descent, was gunned down along with three other International Rescue Committee members as they traveled through Logar province to Kabul.
The aid workers were attacked despite their vehicle being clearly marked with the IRC logo, said a spokesman for the New York-based charity, which is yet to name the victims as it tries to contact their families.
Dr Kirk died along with two other female workers - a Canadian and Trinidadian-American - the IRC said. The fourth casualty was their Afghan driver.
The charity said it would be suspending humanitarian aid duties in Afghanistan after 20 years operating in the country.
IRC President George Rupp said: 'We are stunned and profoundly saddened by this tragic loss.
'These extraordinary individuals were deeply committed to aiding the people of Afghanistan, especially the children who have seen so much strife.
'Words are inadequate to express our sympathy for the families and loved ones of the victims and our devoted team of humanitarian aid workers in Afghanistan.'
The attack was carried out by five Islamic militant gunmen who stepped out of a small village area and fired at the IRC vehicle on the main road.
The attack on the eastern outskirts of the capital on Monday afternoon also wounded two other soldiers from 16 Signal Regiment.
Afghan officials said three civilians were killed and 12 injured. A British woman was among four aid workers killed on Wednesday when their vehicle was ambushed by Islamic militants in Afghanistan. ... more -
Mother Charged in Cult Killing of Son
A woman charged with killing her child was ordered held without bail today during a court proceeding at the Central Booking and Intake Center.
Standing in court with her hands shackled behind her back, Ria Ramkissoon, 21, wore a purple jumpsuit, rocked nervously side to side, and shook her head slightly when Judge Theodore B. Oshrine read the charges against her.
She and four other members of a small group, 1 Mind Ministries, that police have called a religious cult, are accused of abusing and neglecting Ramkissoon's 21-month-old boy, Javon Thompson. In arguing for the judge to give Ramkissoon bail, her attorney, Steven D. Silverman, said in court today that the woman was being controlled by adults during the period when her son died.
"This is not a clear-cut case of one mother's cause and the effect of the death," Silverman said. "You have intervening circumstances. My client was not in control. ... I'm convinced in talking to her that she's been grossly over-charged" by Baltimore police detectives. New 5000m Distance Running World Record set by Tirunesh Dibaba
Worldamazingrecords.com - Ethiopia’s Tirunesh Dibaba set a new world 5,000m record at the Bislett Games Golden League Meet in Oslo Friday.
Her time of 14:11.15 smashed her fellow Ethiopian Meseret Defar’s mark of 14:16.63 on a night with perfect running conditions. Lucy Wangui of Kenya finished a distant second in 14:33.39 while Dibaba’s older sister Ejegayehu claimed 3rd in 14:36.78
Dibaba, who turned 23 on June 1, followed the early pacemaking of Russia’s Anna Alminova and her sister through 3km, which she reached in 8:38.83. That is faster than the world leading time for the distance of 8:42.96 set by Russia’s Gulnara Samitova- Galkina. Dibaba broke away shortly after that point to shatter the world record.
Earlier this year, Dibaba captured the IAAF world cross country title in Edinburgh and was the 2007 IAAF world champion at 10,000m.
