    • End Water Poverty

This charity is working to bring clean water to the people living in poverty. It is a crisis that is killing as many as 50,00 children a day - the equivalent of 20 airliners filled with children lost everyday to an entirely preventable public health crisis, 1.1 billion lack access to clean water, 2.6 billion lack access to basic sanitation. It is a crisis driven by inequality and poverty, where the burden falls most heavily on women. It is girls who are denied an education because they are tasked with fetching water or drop out of school in adolescence because of inadequate sanitation facilities. And as adults, women continue to waste hours each day in the search for water and inevitably look after the children that are ill or dying from diarrhoeal diseases. It is a crisis that hampers economic growth and an entire generation. This charity is working to bring clean water to the people living in poverty. • Everyone their Grain of Sand - Maclovio Rojas fights globalization

Beth Bird's EVERYONE THEIR GRAIN OF SAND chronicles the struggles of the fiercely determined citizens of Maclovio Rojas, Tijuana, Mexico, as they battle the state government's attempts to evict them from their land to make way for corporate development. Over a three-year period, we follow the remarkably spirited and resourceful residents as they build a school by hand and persistently petition the state for such basic services as running water and pay for their teachers. The government responds with a combination of bureaucratic stonewalling and the systematic persecution of community leaders--eventually arresting one leader and forcing others into hiding, where they remain to this day. This heartbreaking and intimate documentary balances these hardships with glimpses of hard-won triumphs and the rhythm of daily life--an elementary school graduation or time at home with family--to remind us what the community is fighting for. The film provides a rare glimpse of the human cost of economic globalization in a part of the world where working people are valued only as cheap labor to fuel the profits of multinational corporations.

    • Celebrating women by Dr. Maya Angelou

      3/31/2008 11:45:30 AM
This entry is part of a series in celebration of Women's History Month.

You may write me down in history
      With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.

This is not the first time you have seen Hillary Clinton seemingly at her wits end, but she has always risen, always risen, much to the dismay of her adversaries and the delight of her friends.

Hillary Clinton will not give up on you and all she asks of you is that you do not give up on her.

There is a world of difference between being a woman and being an old female. If you’re born a girl, grow up, and live long enough, you can become an old female. But, to become a woman is a serious matter. A woman takes responsibility for the time she takes up and the space she occupies.

Hillary Clinton is a woman. She has been there and done that and has still risen. She is in this race for the long haul. She intends to make a difference in our country.

She is the prayer of every woman and man who long for fair play, healthy families, good schools, and a balanced economy.

    • Remembering Dr. King's Legacy on Poverty

      http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rep-barbara-lee/remembering-dr-kings-lega_b_95099.html

Today marks the 40th anniversary of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination in Memphis in 1968. And while plenty can be said about what more could have been accomplished had his life not been cut so tragically short, the legacy he left to us is one that we can rightfully celebrate and strive to uphold.

One of the most enduring (and, in my opinion, under appreciated) aspects of Dr. King's legacy concerns his fight against poverty. From launching the Poor People's Campaign to speaking out against the Vietnam War's negative impact on the poor in America, his vision of a world without poverty is a vision I try to fight for every day. (I founded One Voice PAC in large part to bring more attention to reducing poverty and increasing opportunity in our country.)

We saw success in the fight against poverty this past January, when the House of Representatives unanimously supported a resolution I authored declaring it a national goal to reduce poverty in America by half in the next 10 years.
