US airline offers free 'flight' to nowhere
In order to complete a trial run of the new bag check and security systems at JFK airport, JetBlue Airways has come up with an interesting idea: 1,000 frequent flyers are asked to show up and check prepacked bags given to them, go through security and wait at the gate for an imaginary 'flight'. As a reward, the airline is promising unspecified "giveaways", free parking and lunch.
The trial run is meant to prevent a disaster similar to the chaotic opening of British Airways' Terminal 5 at London's Heathrow Airport in March when the new JFK terminal opens in September. In-flight Wi-Fi to take off with Delta
Delta Air Lines passengers will get Wi-Fi access on all domestic flights by the middle of next year, the company said Tuesday.
Several other airlines, including American Airlines, Virgin America and JetBlue, have announced similar in-flight Wi-Fi plans, but Delta's roll-out is among the most aggressive plans announced.
Specifically, the Atlanta-based airline plans to outfit its domestic fleet of 330 aircraft with Wi-Fi, which amounts to around 60 percent of Delta's seats flown every day. The service won't be available aboard Delta's smaller aircraft, which typically seat 50 to 75 people.
The wireless service, which will allow people to connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi-enabled laptops, PDAs, or smartphones, will cost $9.95 on flights of three hours or less, and $12.95 on flights of more than three hours. The airline is partnering with Aircell, which also supplies in-flight Wi-Fi technology to other carriers, such as American Airlines and Virgin America.
Virgin America has said it will offer the Aircell Gogo service in the fall. And like Delta, it is already planning a massive roll-out. It hopes to have its entire fleet Wi-Fi-enabled by April 2009.
But other airlines are still testing the in-flight service and haven't yet announced plans for massive deployment. JetBlue has been testing a free Wi-Fi service since December on one plane that flies between New York City and San Francisco.
American Airlines, which announced its service more than a year ago, is currently testing the service. It expects to offer Wi-Fi on only 15 planes that fly its transcontinental routes later this year. Delta Air Lines passengers will get Wi-Fi access on all domestic flights by the middle of next year, the company said Tuesday. ... more -

Man spent 3 hour flight on toilet, now suing
A New York City man is suing JetBlue Airways Corp. for more than $2 million because he says a pilot made him give up his seat to a flight attendant and sit on the toilet for more than three hours on a flight from California.
Gokhan Mutlu, of Manhattan's Inwood section, says in court papers the pilot told him to "go 'hang out' in the bathroom" about 90 minutes into the San Diego to New York flight because the flight attendant complained that the "jump seat" she was assigned was uncomfortable, the lawsuit said. Southwest: Airline passenger arrested for using cell phone.
Dallas police met a Southwest Airlines plane at Dallas Love Field on Monday after flight staff reported that a passenger refused to stop using his mobile phone during the flight.
Joe David Jones, 50, was cited for disorderly conduct, Dallas police said.
The incident occurred during a Southwest flight from Austin to Dallas. “After multiple requests, the flight attendants were not successful in getting the passenger to get off the phone,” said Southwest spokeswoman Brandy King.
According to a Dallas police report, flight attendants had asked Mr. Jones to turn off his cell phone and he responded with, "Kiss my ---." When asked again, he stated, "Kiss my ---. Not happening," the report said.
He remained on the phone for about 20 minutes. The pilot radioed the incident to the Love Field tower and Dallas police were notified. Officers met Mr. Jones at the gate and he continued to "exhibit disorderly conduct," police said.
Federal Aviation Administration regulations prohibit any use of mobile phones except when the aircraft is on the ground.
Ms. King said airlines can be fined up to $25,000 if they permit mobile phone usage during a flight, and individuals also can face fines.
“Our flight attendants asked for local authorities to meet the aircraft,” Ms. King said. “At that point, we stepped out of the way and left the matter to the local authorities.”
Carrie Harmon, a Transportation Security Administration spokewoman, said Monday that the federal agency was not involved with the incident.
Ms. Harmon said unless the incident involves someone who is a security threat, TSA isn’t involved. Dallas police met a Southwest Airlines plane at Dallas Love Field on Monday after flight staff reported that a passenger refused to st... more -
Frontier Airlines flies a one way trip to bankruptcy
Last month Frontier sold four of its planes to cut costs, but that wasn't enough to keep them from filing for bankruptcy.
The airline says First Data Corp., it's credit-card processor, located in Greenwood Village, pulled an unexpected move by asking to withhold significant proceeds from ticket sales.
Steve Snyder, a Spokesman for Frontier said, "It would've made it very difficult to continue operations, we took a long hard look at things, tried to negotiate with them, but eventually came to the conclusion that this was the best option."
