Do you remember the Olympic torch? Your atmosphere does.
That was back in April. who cares?
The 5,500 tons of carbon dioxide pollution that the worldwide torch relay emitted is anything but a memory.
To put 5,500 tons into perspective:
A round trip flight between New York and Los Angeles produces 2.4 tons of C02,
driving 12,000 miles in a 2006 Ford Explorer, 7.83 tons.
The British Virgin Islands emit 84,000 tons of C02 per year,
the European Union emits 3.1 billion per year
and the United States 6 billion per year.
A 250-guest wedding, assuming that 125 attendees spend the night at a high-end hotel, will produce 9 tons of C02.
see link to know how 5,500 tons was emitted.

Students plan mass torch 'defence' in Australia
As the Beijing Olympics and torch relay dramas play out, the wave of protest is rearing up further in advance as the torch travels the globe. The Age newspaper in Australia reports that thousands of Chinese Australians are being asked to converge on Canberra next week to rally and defend the Olympic torch against pro-Tibet protesters.
"There was also uproar in Australia after International Olympic Committee deputy president Kevan Gosper said Chinese security officers would help defend the torch in Canberra in the event of "really serious trouble." Prime Minister Kevin Rudd slapped down Mr Gosper's suggestion, saying Chinese officials would be on a bus trailing the torch and would have no security role — a situation confirmed by the Australian Federal Police and local Olympic officials.
Plans to mobilise Chinese support for the torch in Australia follow an outpouring of anger among Chinese nationals and ethnic Chinese around the world over images of pro-Tibet protesters in London and Paris "attacking" the torch, which they see as a symbol of China's re-emergence in the world.
The sentiment was expressed in central Melbourne last weekend when an estimated 4000 people rallied in support of China's rule of Tibet."
It will be very interesting to see how the incalculably enormous Chinese diaspora responds to the image of China that has been so stridently reinforced in the media over this games build up. Let's just hope that the protests and counter-protests remain peaceful. As the Beijing Olympics and torch relay dramas play out, the wave of protest is rearing up further in advance as the torch travels the... more -

Olympic Torch Bearer Removed for Carrying Tibetan Flag
Majora Carter was removed from the San Francisco leg of the torch relay when she attempted to unfurl a Tibetan flag from her sleeve. She claims her 1st Amendment right as the basis for her actions although IOC charter clearly states that "No kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas."
Obviously she's a passionate woman who just wants her opinion heard. Although being an Olympic event, it was probably not of good standing for her to show her political views during such an event.
There are other news articles on the web citing this incident as well. Majora Carter was removed from the San Francisco leg of the torch relay when she attempted to unfurl a Tibetan flag from her sleeve. ... more -
