    • Beat the crunch, farm snails!

That's what one lady in Kent is doing, and she's making quite a tidy sum.

After checking out some of her daughter's work from agricultural college and stumbling across a farm diversification website, she decided to set up a 2000 strong snail-farm in her spare bedroom to supply local businesses with local produce.

"I thought it would be good to be able to offer people who like local food something a bit different."

She feeds them on a dried food which includes dried milk, and chalk that makes their shells all strong and shiny. She claims they are "quite endearing - they don't bite, or smell unpleasant or make a lot of noise and they are really quite friendly."

On the downside, imagine them escaping and having shiny snail trails all over the house...

    • Snail Orgy or Funeral?

One of my friends was over today and she stepped on a snail. We didn't realize that she had done that until she was leaving. When I saw the remains of the snail she had stepped on on the front porch. When suddenly we realized that where she had stepped on the snail on the ground, other snails had converged en mass. It was quite a site to see, so I took a few pictures of them. It looks like a Snail Orgy.

What motivates this strange behavior in these snails?

    • Real 'snail mail' delivered by snails

Don't you love it when figurative language is taken literally? A group of artists from Bournemouth University in the UK, have created a project called Real Snail Mail. They have fitted RFID chips onto gastropods, that allows them to receive emails. Then the snails must cross a tank to deliver the messages. Instead of near instantaneous speed, these messages take on average 1.96 days. Don't you love it when figurative language is taken literally? • Rub a snail on your face for healthier, more mucusy, skin

"There are a number of snail farms set up in South America that service this market and it is here that the qualities of the snail extract were discovered. A doctor discovered that the workers on the snail farm had far softer hands than other manual workers in the region and that any cuts and scrapes they received healed in record time. "

The doctor then thought "Hey, lets milk the snails and sell the goo in jars." Or something like that.

    • Same pet snail for 11 years

A Chinese man says he's had the same snail as a pet for 11 years - and takes it for walks.
Yang Jinsen has now had his pet for twice the normal life span of a snail, reports the Southern Metropolis News.

Yang, a migrant worker in Dongwan city, found the snail by the roadside on his way home from school in 1997.

Back then, he was 14 and the snail was the size of a small coin. Now, he's a married man and the snail fills the palm of his hand.

"I built a small home for it in the yard, and fed it water and soil," he said.

"On weekends, I would take it walking in the fields, and in the evenings I would put it on my desk, playing with it while doing my homework."

Last year, he married and moved to Dongwan to work: "I got permission from my wife to bring the snail with me to the new city," he added.

Experts say it's amazing for a snail to live so long and say it could be because it has been so well looked after.
