MINNEAPOLIS POLICE TARGET AND OBSTRUCT INDEPENDENT PRESS COVERAGE IN THE DAYS LEADING UP TO THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION

Repeated attacks on the civil liberties of independent press and activists before and during the election process emerge as a pattern

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (August 30, 2008) – FBI and Minneapolis police continue attacks on independent journalists in the days leading up to the Republican National Convention, obstructing coverage of important concurrent events. On Saturday morning an FBI officer and a chief deputy from the Douglas County Sheriff’s dept. along with approximately 30 St. Paul police officers bearing firearms, tasers, pepper spray and at least one AR-15 surrounded a house where members of I-Witness Video Collective and journalist Elizabeth Press from Democracy Now were meeting. National Lawyer’s Guild Legal Observer Sarah Coffey was detained in handcuffs outside the building while acting as a liaison with the police. Occupants of the building did not consent to a search and were forced to lock themselves in the building. At approximately 3:00 p.m. (CDT) police officers tried to serve a warrant that had the wrong address. After being denied entry they stormed the building through the attic by gaining access to an adjacent property. The warrant covered all of journalistic equipment including privileged notes, computers, cameras, video tapes and communication devices. People inside were forcefully detained, photographed and police made a record of their names and addresses. After a 45 minute search the police released all detainees and left without seizing any of the equipment. Five other members of I-Witness video who were not present at the house were also simultaneously detained. Three of them detained as they were riding their bicycles a mile away from the scene of the search and the other two as they were driving in a car. The three-hour detainment stopped the media group from documenting three other raids happening simultaneously against activist groups in Minneapolis and St Paul.

This follows an incident from earlier this week when three members of Glass Bead Collective were illegally detained and had their equipment and notes confiscated by the Minneapolis police.

I-Witness Video is an independent media group using video to protect civil liberties. During the 2004 Republican National Convention in NYC, video evidence provided by I-Witness Video exonerated 400 arrestees by exposing lies stated by the NYPD in sworn legal affidavits.

    • In study, evidence of liberal-bias bias in the mainstream media

Haters of the mainstream media reheated a bit of conventional wisdom last week.

Barack Obama, they said, was getting a free ride from those insufferable liberals.

Such pronouncements, sorry to say, tend to be wrong since they describe a monolithic media that no longer exists. Information today cascades from countless outlets and channels, from the Huffington Post to Politico.com to CBS News and beyond.

But now there's additional evidence that casts doubt on the bias claims aimed -- with particular venom -- at three broadcast networks.

    • McCain rides the swiftboat express

John McCain is clearly in bed with the swiftboat group Vets For Freedom.

I would love to see how the right would react to Obama laying down with the moveon.org people.

McCain seems to get a pass on this and many other blunders from the so called "Liberal" media that dominates MSM.

Thanks to Jed Lewison from the jedreport.com for the article

    • Obama vs. McCain: Media Bias Not What You Think

If you happen to be an Obama supporter, let me be the first to warn you: it’s time to brace yourself for a barrage of anti-Obama stories in the mainstream media coupled with pro-McCain and maybe even a few pro-Hillary Clinton stories as well.

No, there’s no massive conspiracy between all the networks to prevent a black man from winning and to continue Bush’s reign by simply replacing him with John McCain while Rove and the Bush political team continue to pull strings. That conspiracy only exists at FOX News, not at the rest of the actual news networks.

And no, there is not some major story about to break about some unknown and horrible piece of Obama’s past.

The real reason Obama is on the verge of entering what may be an extended and negative news cycle is that the media is afraid of a landslide victory by either candidate.

    • CNN (and the Mainstream Media's) National disgrace

"Four more American kids were killed in Iraq today. Four more names piled onto the thousands of dead Americans who volunteered to defend their country and were sent to their deaths by George W. Bush.

"This makes the deadliest month in Iraq since September of 2007.

      "But none of this happened.

"Because our media has no reports on it."

The diary/blog I'm linking to at Daily Kos shows the sorry state of the news media right now and their priorities. "Gotcha" moments about Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Miley Cyrus' photo shoot (another pretty white girl in the pop culture who did something that grabs attention) and other irrelevant things capture our attention while we forget why the US economy is tanking -- we're spending billions of dollars and far too many lives in Iraq.

Spending lives in Iraq... and the Mainstream Media doesn't care any more. Why? Because there are no ratings behind it any more. The executives, sponsors, and investors want eyeballs and the only surefire way of achieving this is satisfying America's Attention Deficit Disorder.

4 lives were snuffed out in an errant military action. But what does it matter?

    • Are Hillary and McCain actually proving Obama's point - Re: Jaded/bitter vote...

Campaign organizers asked Obama what to expect when they volunteered to help him in Pennsylvania -- he said it would be difficult to get his message out because, basically, the citizens of Pennsylvania are out of work and bitter (read: jaded) about politicians making political promises when it comes to jobs and the economy. For decades Bush the First and Slick Willy, er, Bill Clinton all swore on Bibles that they'd bring jobs back and they never did. That's why those voters ignore economic promises and focus more on wedge issues like teaching Intelligent Design in schools (religion), worrying the UN will take away all our guns and enslave us (guns) and worrying about whether or not gays can marry (the evil "them" that is causing all their problems). All in all a rather innocuous common sense statement. Except he said "bitter" instead of "jaded."

And thus the media shit storm began.

One can almost see the near-dead Hillary burst out laughing, clap her hand triumphantly together and shout, "Finally! Now we can crush this little piss ant that dares to take my crown!"

And then came the images we're all familiar with by now. A sober, solemn Hillary speaking softly in the microphone about how (sniff) "disappointed" she was the Obama said that all poor people are evil, racists and stupid and deserve to die. She paused a moment to compose herself -- obviously still shaken to the core about Obama's rant against the commoners -- only to press on and explain that SHE doesn't want to murder all poor people like Obama does. Oh no! Just the opposite. She wants to help them!

And then she went on to explain that she knows how horrible NAFTA is and even though she spent a solid decade praising its accomplishments, secretly she was trying to dismantle it. "I might have been cheerleading NAFTA in the media and said shipping all your jobs to Mexico was a good thing in public, but in private I fought for you! Honest!"

A double talk so blatant that it almost comes off as a unfunny SNL skit.

But the bitter/jaded voters of Penn. are used to politicians like Hillary saying ANYTHING to get elected.

Hillary then went on explain that while Obama wants to ban all firearms and imprison the entire United States and form a one world government -- SHE however loves guns! Loves'em! In fact, she goes out hunting every Sunday. Owns at least 15 different rifles! Yup, yup!

Riiiigth. More double talk, but the voters of Penn. are used to politicians saying anything they have to.

Hillary and McCain then made one of the most ironic comments in this whole donnybrook. Essentially they both feigned indignation that Obama would say these things in "San Fransisco!" They clucked their tongues and dramatically rolled their eyes and said, "Obama claims small town America is intolerant and close-minded? Ha! Well, of course he'd say that to those (wink, wink) light in the loafer millionaires in San Fransisco! Everyone knows no one San Fransisco is a 'real' American!"

Hmmm. Kinda of an odd observation to make, isn't it? How of course "those people" in snooty and queer San Fransisco just don't understand "real" Americans that live in Pennsylvania.

Obama makes an observation that small town Americans in the Rust Belt are jaded and bitter when it comes to political promises.

Both McCain and Hillary then proceed to say anything and promise everything to capitalize on what they view as a potential Obama misstep (not on par with dodging nonexistent sniper fire, but a misstep).

They then both go on to explain that Obama doesn't "get it" if he think small town America is close minded and dislikes outsiders -- but then proceed to explain that "those people" in San Fransisco Obama spoke to are not real Americans because they aren't poor, talk funny and live in a big city.

Aren't these two jackasses (pardon my French) just proving Obama's point?
