3 'deliberate' bus explosions rock Southern China
The town of Kunming, Yunnan was subjected today to 3 individual bus explosions.
So far, 2 have been confirmed dead and 14 others injured.
Reuters suggests this might have to do with the violent clash between local police and farmers over a rubber plant:

Beijing To Shut Down Airport During Opening Ceremony
China's vow to fight terrorism during the Games means instead of screening would-be attackers, they'll simply shut down the airport for 4+ hours.
Anyone who's flown in to Beijing Int'l can tell you what this will do to delays, cancellations, etc.
This article also covers background checks for performers, the crack down on 'undesireables' (previous article), hiding all things considered not aesthically pleasing [photo] and more bar closings in the capital.

Another new way to learn Chinese...
Hey Aric (and everyone else), here's another way to learn Chinese that I created. It uses current Chinese movies with unique self-teaching subtitles. And it's completely free:

By the way Aric, I'm actually one of those 2 cdn guys who are fans of chinesepod and you gave a tour of the chinesepod studio back in the day. Hope to bump into you again in Shanghai, I hope it will be better than that time at Logo bar ;)

More bad news here in China, this one dealing with the riots down Weng'An (photo), but that's not what is the focus - sadly, it's on the differences between dislike, prejudice and flat-out racism. A day after the decision was made to leave and I'm starting to see why:
1. Asthma inhalers are considered illegal now
2. My magazine asked by the gov't 'not to print any more visa stories'
3. A Xinjiang mosque is torn down for not displaying Olympic pride
4. China pushing athletes too hard
5. Why to bet on China
6. 5-star hotel is busted for bribe attempts with foreign media
7. The Taiwanese can't cheer on their own team.

National 'clamp-downs' on dissidents might mean jail time where you're from, but here it involves the words 'disappeared', 'suicide' and 'detained'. A look at how bad the summer pollution in Beijing already is, small victory for the Western Media being able to film in a certain square and protesters saying that Jack Black's new movie is like 'robbing the earthquake victims'...oh boy. Shanghai Diaries - Cold Fairyland, live at Moganshan Lu
Since showing a brief clip of their show last weekend, countless people have asked me about this band, one whom I consider to be the best in China.
For those of us in the P.R.C., a common mistake a lot of bands make here is trying too hard to sound 'western', instead of drawing from their 5000+ years of musical culture.
What Cold Fairyland does is combine the ancient instruments like the 'pipa' with a rock/orchestra background for what can only be described as a 'chilling' performance.
This is the most recent show they did in the art district of Moganshan Lu in Shanghai.
