Nothing makes sports more entertaining than a great rivalry and that is exactly what Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer are starting to build. Although Federer has dominated the rest of the tennis world by winning the lion share of the titles and prize money, Nadal has been able to beat the worlds number one ranked player on many surfaces and under the brightest of spotlights. Their match at Wimbledon this year will likely go down in history as one of the best matches of this or any era. Five grueling sets lasted four hours and forty-eight minutes (a men's Wimbledon finals record) and left Rafael Nadal as the champion. • Nadal beats Federer for Wimbledon title

Rafael Nadal won his fifth Grand Slam title by knocking off five-time defending Wimbledon champion Roger Federer in five thrilling sets.

Nadal fell short the first two times he faced Federer in the Wimbledon finals, but he held on to win this time around, pulling off a 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-7 (8), 9-7 upset. He became the first man since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to win the French Open and Wimbledon in the same season.

Sunday's encounter was the sixth Grand Slam title match between the No. 1-ranked Federer and No. 2 Nadal, more than for any other pair of men in the 40-year Open era.

Nadal leads the head-to-head series 12-6, though away from clay, Federer leads 5-3.

Venus and Serena Williams won in straight sets Thursday to set up their third all-sister Wimbledon final and seventh Grand Slam championship matchup.

Defending champion and four-time winner Venus beat Elena Dementieva 6-1, 7-6 (3), then two-time champ Serena overcame two rain delays and served 14 aces to down China's Zheng Jie 6-2, 7-6 (5).

It will be the first all-Williams final since 2003, when Serena beat her older sister in the championship match for the second year in a row.

    • Hype leads to dissapointment

“Don’t believe the hype” Chuck D from Public Enemy once said and in this case I fully agree. It seems that every time we British blow something up to enormous proportions the bubble bursts. Whether it is Frank Bruno, the England football team or Tim Henman we are only setting ourselves up for a huge disappointment. Now with Andrew Murray we have a very gifted player but will he realistically ever be as good as the Federer’s or Becker’s probably not. Becker won Wimbledon at the age of 17 and went on to achieve much more in a shorter period of time. Of course we should support our gifted but not in the way our Tabloids like to. Murray should develop naturally through his game and not through what he reads in the newspaper. The problem with our sportsman in Britain is Media hype and celebrity if we just butt out a bit and watched more we might produce something of better quality. The tabloids should be directing funds into our schools and sports academies and build the future talent that way then they might have something worth bragging about. “Don’t believe the hype” Chuck D from Public Enemy once said and in this case I fully agree. Andy Murray has lost the biggest match of his career against Rafael Nadal in the men's quarter-finals at Wimbledon.
The Scot never really found any kind of form as the world number two Nadal showed his class, easing into the semi-final with a 6-3 6-2 6-4 win.

    • Andy Murray set for Nadal, according to his gran

Andy Murray today will face the biggest game of his life, playing Majorcan superstar Rafael Nadal in the quarter finals of Wimbledon.

There's been a near media blackout on Murray for the last 24 hours, in order to let Britian's only real hope of success fully prepare.

And prepare he has, his Gran spoke to Sky News saying she's 'never seen him this calm' and that "he's had a good sleep, he's had some good food (sushi) and he's ready to go."

It's gonna be tough, but you think Murray can do it?

    • Gimelstob labels Kournikova a bitch ... and worse

Justin Gimelstob has just been elected to the board of the ATP - the governing body of men's professional tennis. Quite how he remains in that position after a volley of abuse at women's tennis is a mystery to me. Here are some highlights ...

      On Kournikova...
"She is a bitch. Hate's a very strong word. I despise her to the maximum level just below hate... I wouldn't mind having my younger brother, who's a kind of a stud, nail her and then reap the benefits."

"She has a great body but her face is a five."

      On women players...
"Female tennis players lack the social skills, they don't go to high school, they don't go to parties."

      On Tatiana Golovin...
      "She is a sexpot."

      On Nicole Vaidisova...
"She's a well developed young lady."

      On Alize Cornet...
      "She's a little sexpot."

      On the women's tour...
"There are fewer lesbians now because they're all Russian chicks. And there's some other cute ones out there."

Justin, get a life, and open your eyes rather than your mouth in future. You brain - and perhaps something else - is very very small.

    • Murray the last Brit standing in SW19

The much-loved British tradition of roaring on our tennis heroes and tennis zeros continued in fine fashion Thursday night after schedulers arranged for both Scot Andy Murray and Englishman Chris Eaton (ranked a lowly 661 in the world!) to play in the day's last matches on the show courts.

Murray came through in straight sets against Frenchman Fabrice Santoro, but the real drama surrounded until-now-unknown Chris Eaton, who was willed on into the night by an army of young, good looking fans, against the number 25 seed, Russian Tursunov.

Placed over 600 spots lower than the Russian in the rankings Eaton impressed in the first set taking it to a nervy tie-break but eventually fell in 3 sets after forcing Tursunov to serve for the match.

Me thinks we'll be seeing more of this Chris Eaton, hopefully on, but definitely off, the court too if his screaming female fans have their way.

Oh - and the last British womens' hope crashed out of Wimbledon yesterday too losing to defending champ Venus Williams.

So I guess we'll only be hearing "C'mon Andy" for the next week, and perhaps the odd "C'mon Tim" from the nostalgic jokers amongst us.

    • Pigeons killed at Wimbledon

PETA is attacking the organizers of the Wimbledon tournament for calling in marksmen to shootdown dive-bombing pigeons that were distracting players and leaving droppings on the tables of the open-air restaurant.

The main concern, Wimbledon spokesperson Johnny Perkins said, was the health hazard of bird droppings.

Perkins says that usually hawks are employed to scare off any pigeons that may interfere with the intense matches at Wimbledon, but in this case, the hawks couldn't completely cover all the areas needed.

PETA calls this action "cruel and illegal behaviour" that was used more so as an initial tactic than a last resort solely because the pigeons were a distraction to the players, not because of a public health concern as Wimbledon organizers claim.

What do you think? Were the organizers using the guise of public health to kill the pigeons?

To me, I guess the reason doesn't matter...I just which killing the pigeons was just not one of the possibilities to be taken into consideration.

    • Suits you Maria - Sharapova's special Wimbledon tuxedo

Wimbledon's favourite female tennis star has ditched her figure-hugging dresses for a 'tuxedo look'.

Maria Sharapova has chosen to wear shorts and a sleeveless top at the event, which she won in 2004.

Her unique Nike outfit is said to reflect London's 'history in bespoke tailoring' and the shorts feature gold stitching and a subtle pin stripe.

The No.3 seed, who plays her first match today, said: 'I'm changing it up this year: I'm going with the traditional shorts, believe it or not.

'I've never worn shorts at a Grand Slam. I'm going to be debuting that. Call it menswear, obviously.

'It's kind of like a tuxedo look, very simple lines, classic.'

The Russian's warm-up outfit is even more formal - a white two-piece suit with lapels and flared pin-striped trousers for 'ease of movement'.

Topping it off will be a pair of £2,500 diamond and platinum earrings.

But Britain's Got Talent judge Amanda Holden, who visited the Championships yesterday, did not seem impressed.

'Women should wear feminine kits. They may play like men but they should dress like ladies,' she said.

Russian Sharapova, 21, isn't the only star turning heads in SW19. Serena Williams wore a belted raincoat for her warm-up yesterday, while top men's seed Roger Federer took to Centre Court yesterday wearing a natty cardigan.

Bookmakers are offering odds of 500-1 that British No.1 Andy Murray dons a kilt for his Wimbledon first round match today.

Meanwhile, hundreds of tennis fans camped overnight for Centre Court tickets. For the first time they were allowed to pitch tents in lush Wimbledon Park, rather than sleeping on the pavement outside the All England Club.

    • Wimbledon match fixing

Big-spending Russian and Eastern European criminal gambling syndicates working through Austrian intermediaries are being blamed for reports of match-fixing at Wimbledon, with four matches in last year's tournament coming under investigation.

Match-fixers are so successful at exploiting odds given on matches that they can more than compensate a 'tanking' player for their defeat: one player claimed to have rejected an offer of $150,000 to throw a match, compared to the $22,000 fee for a first-round defeat and $40,000 for progressing.
