    • Donald Haskins 1930-2008

      Known as "The Bear" Don Haskins was a basketball player, coach and an unsuspecting civil rights leader. In college, Haskins played under the famous coach Henry Iba at Oklahoma A&M. As a coach, he won 14 Conference championships, played in 14 NCAA tournaments and led the Miners to the 1966 Championship. He will be best known however for his decision to start five African American players in the 1966 Championship game against Kentucky. This decision led to many other schools desegregating their athletics teams. Coach Haskins died at his home in El Paso, Texas. He was 78 years old.       Teicher and Art Ferrante were first dubbed "The Movie Theme Team" in 1961, and were highly acclaimed for their rapid-fire twin-piano performances.

      Together they performed theatrical recordings of themes from such movies as "Midnight Cowboy" "Exodus" and "Tonight" from "West Side Story."

      63 years ago, on August 6, 1945, U.S. forces dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, marking the beginning of the end of WWII. Three days later, a second nuclear bomb was detonated over Nagasaki.

      The bombs killed as many as 140,000 people in Hiroshima and 80,000 in Nagasaki by the end of 1945.

      Since then, thousands more have died from injuries or illness attributed to exposure to radiation released by the bombs.
