Marine cleared over Haditha Massacre
A US military jury has acquitted a marine of charges that he helped cover up the killing of 24 unarmed Iraqi civilians in Haditha in 2005.
Lt Andrew Grayson had been charged with obstruction of justice and making false statements - charges he denied. He had been accused of instructing a sergeant to delete digital photographs of the incident.
Four marines and four officers were initially charged in the case, but the case against five of them was dropped. The marines were charged with murder and the officers with failing to investigate the deaths. The trial is being held at Camp Pendleton, a military base in California. Lt Grayson was the first to be tried.
The killings occurred after a roadside bomb in Haditha on 19 November 2005 left one marine dead and injured two others. The US military at first reported that the Iraqis had been killed by that explosion, or in a subsequent gunfight with insurgents.
But Iraqi witnesses said the US troops shot dead five unarmed men when they approached the scene of the bombing in a car. The troops were then accused going to nearby houses and killing 19 other civilians.
There was no full US investigation into what happened until January 2006, when video footage emerged of the aftermath, filmed by a local human rights activist. Peru: Mass grave uncovered
Forensic teams have exhumed 60 bodies from what is thought to be the largest mass grave from the Peruvian government's bloody war against the Maoist.
Several children were among about 140 peasants massacred by the military in the Andes Mountains of southern Peru in 1984. Fifteen of 60 bodies recovered so far were those of children.
Excavators are comparing DNA extracted from the remains with living relatives who believe they lost loved ones in the incident.
The burial site in Putis is believed to be the largest mass grave related to the Peruvian military's fight against the Shining Path, a Maoist group that fought in the 1980s and '90s to replace Peru's government with a revolutionary regime. EYE-WITNESS TO SABRA-SHATILA MASSACRE
Dr Ang Swee Chai grew up supporting Israel. Arabs, she was told, were terrorists. But in 1982, on the television she saw the relentless bombing of Beirut by Israeli planes. Shocked, her view of Israel began to change. It was then that she heard of an international appeal for an orthopaedic surgeon to treat war victims in Beirut. The petit woman - she was just under 1.5 meters - resigned her job in London, bade her husband farewell and set out on a journey to civil war Beirut, there she was to eye-witness the Sabra-Shatila massacres*.
With her husband Francis Khoo, and some friends, Dr Ang Swee Chai helped to form the British charity, Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), following the 1982 Sabra-Shatila massacres. In 1987, PLO chairman Yasser Arafat awarded Dr Ang Swee Chai the "Star of Palestine" the highest award for service to the Palestinian people. Dr Ang Swee Chai grew up supporting Israel.
