Nader taking votes from McCain
"In a head-to-head match up between Barack Obama and John McCain in the latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, Obama is holding steady with a 47%-41% advantage. But what happens when Ralph Nader is thrown in the mix?
Obama’s lead is strengthened to 48%-35%, with Nader nabbing 5% and Libertarian candidate Bob Barr registering at 2%.
Both pollsters credit the results to the “enthusiasm gap” between Obama and McCain, in that Obama’s supporters are more solidly lined up behind the expected Democratic nominee. McCain suffers from a looser base of support."
Most people assume Nader will "steal" votes away from Obama, but that is not necessarily the case. What's the point? We need to embrace third party candidates instead of being fearful. Democrats voted for FISA out of fear
It was not the fear of terrorist attacks by Islamic fundamentalists that motivated Barack Obama, many Democratic senators and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to grant President George W. Bush expanded powers to wiretap Americans in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.
Instead, it was the fear of Republican campaign operatives who paralyze Democratic lawmakers with these words: "My Democratic opponent is weak on terrorism."
The advice that Washington wise men give to Democratic incumbents is that, even if you think it is wrong, vote for the president's anti-terrorism bills or the Republicans will do to you what they did to Max Cleland. A decorated Vietnam War hero, Cleland lost his seat in the U.S. Senate in 2002 when Georgia lawyer Saxby Chambliss ran ads declaring Cleland was soft on fighting terrorism.
Although it was six years ago, the shadow of Chambliss ads still looms large over the 21 Democratic senators, including the party's presumptive presidential nominee, who voted last week to loosen court checks on government wiretaps. Obama: Nader's just trying to get attention
Responding to Ralph Nader's comments that Barack Obama is "talking white" and trying to appeal to "white guilt," Obama said it's a shame people may forget about the famed consumer advocate's contributions to society.
"Ralph Nader is just trying to get attention," Obama said. "Ralph Nader is someone whose campaign ... hasn't gotten any traction."
Nader, who in February started his fourth run for president, is credited with helping popularise auto seatbelts and airbags, and for standing up for consumers against corporations for decades, initially through his group Public Citizen. He was instrumental in the founding of government agencies that protect citizens from corporate environmental pollution and workers from unsafe working conditions. He gained repute with the publication in 1965 of his book "Unsafe at Any Speed," which detailed safety defects in American cars.
In an interview published today, Nader criticised Obama for not speaking out on payday loans and predatory lending, lead poisoning and asbestos. He wondered if Obama won't take up those issues and cry out about the plight of the inner cities because he doesn't want to sound like Jesse Jackson. Who killed the third party movement?
With the upcoming election, I noticed something strange: since 1968, the third parties started to gradually decline in their notoriety. I think it may have something to do with the rise of television, and news programs that only cover the big parties. It may also have to do with the greater amount of money required for mainstream campaigning, as opposed to grassroots campaigning in the 1800s and such.
