"Parkdale Princess" buried
Amazing Grace is supposed to be uplifting but, yesterday inside a west Toronto church, it revealed the hallmarks of devastation.
Near the end of the hymn, the mother of little Katelynn Angel Sampson had to be helped to her murdered daughter's casket, the last solemn act of a tear-filled service to remember the bubbly 7-year-old beaten to death last week.
“Why?” cried two women on a balcony inside the packed Parkdale Presbyterian Church, sobbing openly as Katelynn's body was wheeled out of the building.
Katelynn was found dead on Aug. 3 having been “assaulted throughout her entire body,” police said, the apparent victim of months of brutal violence.
Mourners recoiled in horror at Monday's open-casket visitation, the image of Katelynn's battered and stitched face difficult to shake for many friends and family.
The girl wore a white, straw hat over her head where she had reportedly been scalped shortly before her death.
But much of the anger toward the accused in Katelynn's death – her legal caregivers – subsided yesterday, if only for a moment, to celebrate the life of “Parkdale's princess.”
“There's a different atmosphere here now,” said Tracey Rodda, a close friend of Katelynn's mother, Bernice Sampson.
“We will never forget what happened to our Angel, but today is more about celebrating Katelynn, remembering her.”
Charged with second-degree murder in Katelynn's death is Donna Irving, 29, and her common-law husband, 45-year-old Warren Johnson. Amazing Grace is supposed to be uplifting but, yesterday inside a west Toronto church, it revealed the hallmarks of devastation. ... more -
Woman caught on tape spanking 6-month-old
A 54-year-old live-in child caregiver who admitted to spanking an infant was fined $200 or one month in prison for committing the offense. Pearline Hart of Elizabeth Estates, who was caught on camera spanking a six-month-old boy, appeared before Magistrate Renae McKay yesterday. She pleaded guilty to cruelty to a child.
Hart, a former hospital employee who was recommended to the child's parents by a family member, was caught on tape spanking the child by a surveillance camera the family set up in the nursery.
Hart, who lived with the family from February 2008 to the middle of June, agreed with the evidence that on June 13 and June 15 at Winward Road, while taking care of a six-month-old boy, she mistreated the infant.
However, the parents did not watch the recordings on a regular basis, and when they decided to view the tapes they were shocked to see the caregiver spanking the child.
The child's mother saw Hart hit her son with her hand on various parts of his body.
The video prompted the mother to review previous recordings of the caregiver with the child and again the mother saw Hart spanking the child.
Sgt. Bannister said in one of the video clips, Hart angrily grabbed the child by his arm and leg and threw him in the bed and spanked him.
The video showed that the child was hit by Hart with the back of her hand twice, and on another occasion the infant was spanked three times on the back of his legs.
The caregiver was immediately terminated and the matter was reported to the police.
After hearing all the evidence, Magistrate McKay ordered that Hart pay a $200 fine or spend one month in prison.
The maximum penalty is a $250 fine or imprisonment for one year, or both, or upon conviction before the Supreme Court, a maximum fine of $1,000 or three years imprisonment, or both.
