    • Muslims express shock and condemn Exeter blast

Muslim leaders and equality groups have called for unity following Thursday's explosion in Exeter city centre with many Muslims attending Friday prayers at Exeter Mosque and Cultural Centre, in York Road at Friday prayers spoke of their shock at what had happened.

Religious leader Mohammed Abrar, speaking on behalf of the trustees of the Islamic Centre of the South West, said:

"Islam abhors all acts of terrorism. Islam and all religions teach us love, mercy, forgiveness and peace.

"There is no doubt that any act of terror is a great sin in the eyes of God. In fact, such evil deeds make us all victims, including the Muslim community.

"It is our humanity that must bring us together to condemn, oppose, and overcome those who would spread fear."

Mr Abrar said he and the trustees extended their thanks to the emergency services for conducting an efficient and effective operation.

He added: "Those who planned suspected acts of terrorism wanted to demoralise us as a nation and divide us as a people. We must remain united in our common determination, so that terror cannot and will not succeed."

Abid Mohammed, 42, of Okehampton Road who converted to Islam in 2004.

He said: "At Exeter Mosque we teach people to care for and love one another, not to hurt people."

Theeb Aldrossy, 29, a student at Exeter University, said he hoped there would be no backlash against the Muslim community.

"The people of Exeter are lovely," he said. "They respect us and we respect them."

      Nazrul Islam, 30, said:

"Islam is a religion about peace. I come to the mosque every Friday and we are always taught to be safe, to look after everyone and everything. This gives a bad impression of Muslims, but you cannot put all people into one box. Just because one Muslim is doing something does not mean others will follow."

David Wright, a spokesman for the Olive Tree Association, which provides help and support for ethnic minorities, said he hoped the community of Exeter would come together in defiance of terrorism rather than letting fear divide groups.

"We should be learning more about each other in order to understand different cultures," he said. "That happens all the time in schools and community centres with people working together, but what scares me is that can all be undone.

"When something like this happens there is often a backlash. You get Islamaphobia, you get people assuming that any Muslim or anyone with different colour skin is somehow implicated or a suspect. That is completely daft and wrong."

Linda Ramdeen, operational director of Devon Equality Council, said she had heard of at least two instances of Muslim people being verbally abused in the street since the explosion in Exeter on Thursday.

"There will be an impact," she said. "But there's a lot of love around. I have faith in people that they won't allow this to put the agenda back and let it affect the next generation. I hope we can move on from this."

    • A lebanese Muslim tries to help Jewish Lebanese community

A Lebanese Muslim -Aaron-Micaël Beydoun is trying to raise awareness about Jews in Lebanon and with the help of his website (thejewsoflebanon.org) he is trying to stop the segregation of this tiny minority.

      In Concordia University Beydoun said:

"Let the Jews of Lebanon live," The 21-year-old said his mission is to help Jews of Lebanon realize "that they are not alone in their country." With his website, he helps Jewish Lebanese communicate with fellow Jews living all around the world.

"We can all live together," he said. Currently a member of the Lebanese American Chamber of Commerce and a contributing journalist for an alternative magazine in Beirut, Beydoun also started a NGO to help needy Jewish Lebanese through monetary assistance and to take part in projects such as renovating Beirut's great synagogue. It has become harder for Jews to practise their faith in Lebanon due to the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Beydoun said the violence directed toward Jews must stop. The young man said the Lebanese youth is tired of sectarianism, "a cancer" as he called it. "The society is still sick of this mentality," he said. Beydoun added that the Lebanese youth does not want to continue on the path their parents and grand-parents paved before them.

The second topic of discussion at the event was the history of Sepharadi Jews. The chairperson of Spanish Language studies at Université de Montréal, Oro Anahory-Librowicz, said that culture must be preserved through a dynamic process. She explained that Sepharadi Jews are descendants of Spanish Jews who were expelled by the King of Spain. They settled in the Ottoman Empire, in Turkey and Lebanon.

Imams in Uttar Pradesh (UP), India are to give discourses after Friday prayers to tell what the Holy Quran teaches about terrorism in Mosques.

Ulemas (Muslim scholars) under the banner of "Movement Against Terrorism", which was formed after a meeting of Muslim clerics and scholars in February, have sent letters to imams throughout the state to issue appeals against all terror activities.

The Niab Imam of Idgah, who is also a member of All India Muslims Personal Law Board, Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangimahali said imams have been asked to create awareness among people so that innocents do not fall prey to the designs of extremists, who use issues like Babri Mosque demolition and post Godhra riots to whip up religious sentiments.

"once they are in the know of what Islam has to say about terrorism there would be clarity in their minds and they would not not fall prey to them (terror outfits)".

    • Jaipur's Muslim's: this is not jihad

JAIPUR: On Friday, the first jume ki namaz after Tuesday’s blasts tore the city apart, Johari Bazaar’s Jama Masjid echoed with the chants.

Along with Imam Syed Mufti Amjad Ali, worshippers prayed for peace to the departed souls, solace and strength to the injured and the affected families and reason in the minds of the terrorists.

“Let us pray to Allah to guide to perverted souls so that they start loving the human race and stop killing them without reason. Let us pray for those who were killed in the blasts and for those who sustained injuries. God may give strength to the families to bear the shock,” said the Imam. The devotees bowed in response.

“Jihad means saving people and guarding one’s religion. In India people from all religions live together peacefully and there is no threat to anyone so who is fighting with whom and for what? It cannot be termed ‘jehad’ in any sense,” the Imam later told DNA.

“Tamaam Muslim jammat ayesi vardaaton ki mukhalfat karti hai” (The whole Muslim community condemns such a ghastly act), he reiterated, adding people from all religions were affected by the blasts.

Tuesday’s blasts included 12 Muslims among the dead and 30 in the list of injured, a spokesperson of the Rajasthan Muslim Forum said. He said businesses of several traders from the community were also hit. “Terrorists don’t have any religion and they just want to disturb communal harmony in otherwise peaceful nations like India. At least 20% of the Muslim community suffered due to the blasts. Where is the jehad?” he wondered.

    • Friday namaz for Jaipur blast victims

JAIPUR: It was a prayer with a difference. On 16th May on Friday, thousands of Muslims, who congregated at the Jama Masjid at Johri Bazar, offered "special namaz" in memory of serial blast victims.

The chief Imam (Syed Amzad Ali) led the devotees in grieving over the tragedy and in condemning the terror attack. He said "Killing an innocent person is like killing the entire humanity and saving an innocent is considered saving the entire humanity," while reciting the holy Quran sermons. He strongly condemned the blasts that claimed 63 lives and left over 250 injured.

Imams at other mosques in the city also talked peace. Soon after the prayers, a meeting was called by Muslim clerics to discuss the situation arising out of the blasts. At the meeting also, special prayers were held.

There were condemnations all around. Sahnawaz Khan of Lohari mosque ghat gate said the perpetrators of terror have nothing to do with any religion. "There motive was to drive a wedge between Hindus and Muslims," he said and added their purpose won't be served.

This Friday's prayers were held amid high security. Police teams were seen frisking devotees before they entered the mosque. Volunteers also kept a strict vigil on the prayer venue.

    • New York imam forges close ties with city's Jews

The largest Mosque in NY, the ICC, is getting applause from the city's influential Jewish community. Mohammad Shamsi Ali is the Mosque's Indonesian born-imam.

Rabbis who've spoken there call it an open and welcoming community. The Jewish Theological Seminary and the ICC are planning a joint soup kitchen for the homeless. The mosque is organizing an inter-religious studies program for teenagers.

"What I heard Shamsi Ali preach was as fine a sermon on brotherhood as has ever been preached," said Visotzky, professor of midrash (scriptural interpretation) and inter-faith studies across town at the Jewish Theological Seminary.

Rabbi Marc Schneier spoke at the ICC last year and invited the imam to speak in his Synagogue last month:

"It was impressive when he spoke to the congregation about Israel's territorial integrity and how suicide bombings are a perversion of the Koran and Islam."

The imam has taken part in the prayer at an inter-faith memorial service in Yankee Stadium two weeks after the September 11 attacks. Ali has also been active in larger inter-faith initiatives such as the National Dialogue of Muslims and Catholics and Imams and Rabbis conferences in the United States and abroad.
