Lower Manhattan Cultural Council
Art Happens Here
From Wall Street to Washington Square, from the Battery to the Bowery, from the East River to the Hudson, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council invigorates the arts Downtown.
We turn banks into concert halls, offices into art installations and storefronts into
jewel box theaters. In two short years, we’ve matched over 100 artist projects with 150,000 square feet of temporarily vacant downtown real estate.
1000 artists and writers apply every year for 20 coveted spots in our 9-month long residency program. By placing artists in studios in the Financial District, we change what it means to “work” on Wall Street.
Through 7 programs, 350 artists and organizations, $1.6 million, every year we give direct support to artists for production, marketing, capital projects, festivals and more. And our programs reach every one of Manhattan’s neighborhoods.
We bring art where it’s least expected and engage the ideas of the moment, burnishing and tarnishing the links between culture and capital. We curate, produce and commission art installations, performances, concerts and symposia to insert questions of art into urban experience.
Today, three decades after its founding, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council remains at the forefront of Downtown’s creative hub, linking artists with new audiences and sustaining Manhattan’s vast and vibrant arts community.
The website is an invitation to see some exclusive artwork in all forms of their expression. Art Happens Here ... more -
