    • A compelling argument for public transportation

Public transportation in the United States saves 3.4 billion gallons of oil every year and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by a whopping 26 million tons.

That's enough to reduce daily oil imports 2% -- another reminder that conservation and smart use of our energy is the cheapest and fastest way to reduce demand for foreign oil, and reduce the threat of global warming.

Not swayed by facts and figures? How about pure raw emotion? Check out this Environmental Defense Fund ad.

Didn't much fancy the new video for Air France's "Collapsing at your Doorstep" - it's not bad, but a bunch of different-colored wind turbines doesn't do justice to the best song of the summer.

So instead, how about we introduce "Collapsing" to The Dove's "There Goes the Fear" video, featuring your common man's grocery store freakout/feverish dream about escaping to Brazil? We can all relate, yes?

    • Prison Break divide: tube encourages good behavior should they go Digital?

'Don't think prisons when I think about that argument against a digital-divide inequality in America -- (which affects making sure we have an equal playing field for folks locked in poverty as those with a silver spoon in their mouth)...

So, when I hear - 'the nation's broadcasters make the switch from analog to digital signals next Feb. 17, televisions that aren't hooked up to cable, satellite or a converter box will be reduced to static...'

I pull out the worlds smallest violin to I listen to prisoners cry "waaaah, I can't watch America Idol..."

'While TV might seem like an undeserved luxury for inmates, prison officials and inmates say the tube does more than fill year after year of idle hours - it provides a sense of normalcy and is a bargaining chip that encourages good behavior.'

I don't know about you, but I don't think missing out on getting HBO qualifies as cruel and unusual punishment.

Natural smoke (and its Photoshop variety) seem to become more and more a media of choice for artistic expression. Artists inherently like smoke for its flux and dynamic properties, and the public seem to enjoy asking the perennial question "What were they smoking?" when seeing a radical and challenging piece of art.

Today, we'll feature some examples of "smoke art", and marvel at how such an elusive substance can be possibly herded into fascinating shapes.

Aphrodite Coulter, Oprah Hestia, Hermes Colbert. These are the names of some of the portraits in A Pantheon of Media Gods by Jessie Rauch.

Rauch describes the project as, “A series that transforms media celebrities into Greek Gods as metaphorical commentary on the power that individual pundits and journalists have in controlling access to information and in the shaping of public opinion.”

For example, the caption of the O’Reilly Ares portrait says, ‘Hail to O’Reilly, father of the NO-SPIN ZONE. His Mighty power dares to challenge truth itself. He works with woe embitter human life.”

Beyond being humorous and sarcastic, the series opens our eyes to the power these news and media personalities hold over a large number of people.

    • Sicilian Mayor Selling Houses For €1 Each.

How would you like a house in Italy for one euro? The house, it should be pointed out, will be not just dilapidated but near collapse, and probably need at least €100,000 (£80,000) of structural repairs.

This "offer you cannot refuse" comes from Salemi, a town south of Palermo in Sicily. Its new and eccentric mayor, the art critic-turned-politician Vittorio Sgarbi, believes that selling off property at knockdown prices could be the way to save Salemi's exquisite old quarter.

Since an earthquake in 1968 Salemi's ancient centre, parts of which date back more than 1,000 years to the Muslim occupation, has become depopulated.

"There are 3,700 houses owned by the council, almost all in the old town, that are in danger of falling down - of crumbling and dying," Sgarbi had said. He initially offered the houses, free of charge, to anyone from Salemi agreeing to do the renovations. But today, courting celebrities, Sgarbi hands the first to football boss José Mourinho's new employer, Massimo Moratti, chairman of Inter Milan.

"We're thinking of people who have the sensibility and economic resources to embark on this adventure," Sgarbi was yesterday quoted as telling Corriere della Sera. "In exchange for a token payment of one euro we will offer them one of these houses and ask that they undertake to restore them within two years while respecting their original characteristics."

Sgarbi said the idea was the brainchild of his friend Oliviero Toscani, the photographer behind the Benetton clothing adverts, who is creativity adviser to Salemi council. Sgarbi has also put a prince in charge of heritage and town planning while a performance artist is "adviser on nothing". At first an anarchist, Sgarbi became an admirer of Silvio Berlusconi and had a post in the government of 2001. He was removed a year later. He founded his own "Beauty party" before linking up with the centre-left and then the right.

    • Faking ethnic eyes

They say the grass is always greener on the other side. While most white American women would die for exotic, almond-shaped eyes, some who have them are masking them with make-up. Exotic eye fashion is a hot new trend in America, and if you don’t have truly “exotic” eyes, you fake them to get ultra-glam with shadows, mascara and eyeliner. Eyelash extensions are also a huge part of America’s late and great almond-eye craving.

In Japan, however, where perfect, almond-shaped eyes are everywhere, the latest trend is to look less ethnic and more Caucasian. Check out this ad for the new, big make-up fad from Japan. It is almost impossible to tell that the girl in the ad is Japanese. Unless you look at the “before” picture of her eye, you can’t even tell that it is beautifully exotic. Add white-blonde hair and blue contacts and you can no longer tell that this model is Asian at all.

It may seem strange and funny to us, but how different is this to the glamorous and exotic looking make-up we push in America? The point is to get creative and different with your eye make-up, and to never be afraid to try something new. Stand out and make your own eye statement. Whether almond-shaped or rounded, let yours shine.

    • Designer Eyeglass Craze - Sarah Palin Fuels Kawasaki 704 Glasses Craze (GALLERY)

You can’t look at Sarah Palin without marveling at how beautiful her eyeglasses are, and how perfectly they set the tone of serious, yet stylish. Her nomination for vice president has set off a genuine rush to optical businesses by women who want her glasses.

Sarah Palin’s glasses are custom made, but based on the Kawasaki 704 series, and the color is 34 gray. The Sarah Palin frame — minus the lenses — starts at a suggested $375. Depending on the type of lenses you have installed, the total package can run to $700.

Other fashion forward women that have been seen in public wearing corrective lenses (that aren’t sunglasses) are Amanda Peete, Cate Blanchette, Chloe Sevigny, Jennifer Gardner, Kirsten Dunst, Lindsay Lohan and Sharon .

    • Tabloid Covers - Obama & Palin in OK Magazine. (GALLERY)

In yet another sign of politics becoming a topic of gossip, Sarah Palin and Obama grace two alternative covers in the new issue of OK Magazine. Yes, OK Magazine!

McCain can’t point fingers at Obama being a celebrity a la Paris Hilton and Britney Spears anymore, as his running mate Sarah Palin is becoming quite the celebrity gossip fodder herself. I think McCain’s notorious, immature campaign ad is going to come back and bite him in the ass…

Both features tackle the issue of family. But while Obama’s story is about life with his three girls, wife and two daughters, Palin’s story is much more complicated.

Sarah Palin, the Republican vice presidential candidate is featured with her 5-month-old son Trig Paxson Van Palin. After much speculation, it turned out that she did deliver the baby, and that her 17-year-old daughter, Bristol is actually pregnant with another baby…

I am really saddened with the state of politics, maybe Paris Hilton will be a much better President…

    • Michael Moore to release film online for free

NEW YORK - Inspired by Neil Young and Radiohead, Michael Moore will release his new film online and for free.

The film, “Slacker Uprising,” follows Moore’s 62-city tour during the 2004 election to rally young voters. It will be available for three weeks as a free download to North American residents, beginning Sept. 23. An official announcement of the film is planned for Friday.

Moore said he considered releasing “Slacker Uprising” theatrically as “Michael Moore’s big election year movie” as he did with 2004’s “Fahrenheit 9/11,” which was highly critical of President Bush.

Instead, Moore opted for a symbol of gratitude to his fans as he approaches the 20th anniversary of his first film, 1989’s “Roger & Me.”

“I thought it’d be a nice way to celebrate my 20th year of doing this,” Moore said. “And also help get out the vote for November. I’ve been thinking about what I want to do to help with the election this year.”
