    • Nigeria arranges 'HIV marriages'

HIV-positive couples are being paired up for marriage by a northern Nigerian state in an attempt to reduce the spread of the disease.

But international Aids experts have voiced concern at the plan. Warren Naamara from UNAids said the two people could have different strains of the virus, which could interact. He said the couples should use condoms.

Around 70 couples have been matched up in the last few weeks, Bauchi state authorities told the BBC. Authorities in the state say they are trying to stop HIV spreading and battle the "isolation and stigma" of the disease.

Some 3% of Nigeria's adult population - 2.4 million people - is estimated to be HIV-positive

    • Designer Eyeglass Craze - Sarah Palin Fuels Kawasaki 704 Glasses Craze (GALLERY)

You can’t look at Sarah Palin without marveling at how beautiful her eyeglasses are, and how perfectly they set the tone of serious, yet stylish. Her nomination for vice president has set off a genuine rush to optical businesses by women who want her glasses.

Sarah Palin’s glasses are custom made, but based on the Kawasaki 704 series, and the color is 34 gray. The Sarah Palin frame — minus the lenses — starts at a suggested $375. Depending on the type of lenses you have installed, the total package can run to $700.

Other fashion forward women that have been seen in public wearing corrective lenses (that aren’t sunglasses) are Amanda Peete, Cate Blanchette, Chloe Sevigny, Jennifer Gardner, Kirsten Dunst, Lindsay Lohan and Sharon .

    • Tabloid Covers - Obama & Palin in OK Magazine. (GALLERY)

In yet another sign of politics becoming a topic of gossip, Sarah Palin and Obama grace two alternative covers in the new issue of OK Magazine. Yes, OK Magazine!

McCain can’t point fingers at Obama being a celebrity a la Paris Hilton and Britney Spears anymore, as his running mate Sarah Palin is becoming quite the celebrity gossip fodder herself. I think McCain’s notorious, immature campaign ad is going to come back and bite him in the ass…

Both features tackle the issue of family. But while Obama’s story is about life with his three girls, wife and two daughters, Palin’s story is much more complicated.

Sarah Palin, the Republican vice presidential candidate is featured with her 5-month-old son Trig Paxson Van Palin. After much speculation, it turned out that she did deliver the baby, and that her 17-year-old daughter, Bristol is actually pregnant with another baby…

I am really saddened with the state of politics, maybe Paris Hilton will be a much better President…

    • Palin's Kuwait Gun Practice (VIDEO) & Arial Safari.

Perhaps McCain’s surprising selection of Sarah Palin as VP was motivated by the desire to appeal to a, uh, younger male demo? I thought originally it was to win over angry Hillary supporters, but after reading about Palin’s curious fascination with the brutal and controversial sport of ”Arial Safari” I’m beginning to wonder.

Here’s how it goes. You get in a plane and fly into protected wilderness. Then you shoot large animals (like wolves and bears as they attempt to run from the plane) with extremely high-powered long distance rifles, blowing your prey into pieces all over the freshly fallen snow.

Sound fun? Well Sarah Palin thinks so. Palin won a “victory” a few days ago for the small constituency that is in favor of this bloody and un-sportsmanlike sport, by funneling $400,000 of taxpayers money to a large-scale marketing campaign.

I’m not opposed to hunting, but it seems that there is usually a purpose—i.e. saving the animal to eat, or at least a trophy?? In this case the animal is left to die and that’s the whole game.

This seems in keeping with her strong affiliation with NRA and her thoroughly anti-environmental politics. Going against even the extremely conservative Bush position, she feels that science is wrong when it comes to the facts of melting sea ice, polar bear habitats and global warming.

Palin has also allegedly broken the law in order to defeat a Clean Water ballot measure this summer. It is against the law for a governor to officially advocate for or against a ballot measure. But Palin took what she calls “personal privilege” to discuss one of this year’s most contentious initiatives.

Palin also used state Department of Natural Resources resources to lobby for defeat of the Clean Water Initiative under the pretense of creating a state run website to “educate” citizens. The citizen group Alaskans for Clean Water is filing suit.

But one thing you can say. Sarah Palin knows how to handle a gun. Watch the recently circulated video which is gaining hits like mad, showing Palin at a gun practice in Kuwait.
She not only wants to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling, but actually vowed to sue the EPA if it dared to declare polar bears an endangered species. It's hard for most people to understand this sort of hatred for the great mammal species struggling to hang on at the edges of this continent. (alternet.org)

    • Sen. Joe Biden's Daughter Arrested?!?!

The daughter of Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. (D-Del.) was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of obstructing a police officer outside a Chicago bar

Ashley Blazer Biden, 21, of Wilmington, Del., was with a group of people on a North Side street where several bars are located when someone else threw a bottle at an officer, police said.

When police tried to arrest another person, Biden blocked the officer’s path and made intimidating statements, officer JoAnn Taylor said.

Biden was later released and is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 20.

Sen. Biden’s spokeswoman, Margaret Aitken, declined to comment, calling it a private, family matter.

    • The Man Behind Palin's Speech

As Democrats and Barack Obama's campaign scrambled to attack Sarah Palin's well-received acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn., on Wednesday night, they latched on early and hard to the fact that it was penned by former Bush speechwriter Matthew Scully. But the story is more complicated than just the recycling of a Bush staffer into John McCain's fold, and it tells you more about how McCain's camp intends to use Palin than it does about the continuing influence of the current White House. With airlines cutting security and safety measures from onboard and inflight safety, I have to admit that perhaps we will be required to fly with risks for our own safety in the name of saving fuel costs.
This article states the reality of fear that perhaps not just having security screening which allow TSA officials to look at our naked bodies, but now, we'll have to disclose our weight to ticket and gate agents. Is nude flying next ?

I think I'll stop eating those outlandishly generous peanuts inflight to lose some kilos.

    • America invades Pakistan?

By NAHAL TOOSI, Associated Press Writer

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - A deadly American-led raid on a Pakistani village embarrassed the government and eroded support for the pro-U.S. presidential front-runner Thursday just two days before the election.

Furor continued to mount over the first known foreign ground assault inside Pakistan against a suspected Taliban haven. The government summoned the U.S. ambassador for an official protest, while Parliament passed resolutions of condemnation.

In news likely to stoke more anger, intelligence officials said a missile strike was suspected in a blast Thursday that killed at least four people in North Waziristan, part of the tribal belt where Osama bin Laden and his deputy are thought to be hiding. Previous such strikes have been blamed on the U.S.

The ground assault, with troops helicoptered in, occurred in adjacent South Waziristan early Wednesday. Officials said at least 15 people died, including women and children. The Foreign Ministry said no militant leaders were killed and there was no sign the attackers detained anyone.

U.S. officials declined public comment. But a U.S. military official said intelligence had indicated the presence in the village of people "clearly associated with attacks on U.S. forces in Afghanistan." He spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of cross-border operations.

    • Stop Worrying, The Planet Will Be Fine…

It’s us that I am worried about.

It’s true, most of the living things on the planet are going to take a mean beating if things continue to warm up as every credible scientist on earth seems to believe, but the planet itself will be perfectly fine…it will still be here long after we are gone. It’s the humans and all the animals that might not make it, and that is why I have been giving something a lot of thought.

I think we need to change the message of the environmental movement.

See, there are still millions of people that think that global warming and all the problems it could bring is a hoax set upon us by…well, I am not sure who is doing it. People still think that A. it is not happening and B. that the planet will figure out a way to save itself. As for A, I think all they have to do is start reading scientific reports about it to see that it is indeed happening and is not just some cyclical “thing” that happens now and then. As for B, I agree with them 100%…the planet will figure a way to survive global warming and fix it by getting rid of the problem, which is us. We are the problem. We are causing it. The unending assault on the environment by carbon dioxide emissions, our cars, our coal plants, our strip-mining of the earth, our pollution of our oceans and waterways with toxic sludge and wayward plastics, and our disregard for our natural forests and environment is leading us down a very dangerous precipice that everyone should be equally concerned about. But they are not and that is because human beings believe that they are in-fact infallible and could never cause the damage that scientists are telling us that we are causing. So I think we need to change the message to one of a more personal concern.

Telling people that the environment is hurting does not seem to change any minds. Telling them that their water supply is in danger does not seem to bother them. That is why we need to start admitting that the planet will be fine even with global warming, it’s just that we won’t be here anymore. Maybe then people will start to care enough to do their small part to clean up their act. Maybe if we stop harping on the animals and the rain forest and the polar bears and begin concentrating on people’s own families, their children, their grandparents, their future generations, we can get their attention.

You can leave out the part about peak oil as people just say that technology will save us. You can leave out the part about flood waters invading Manhattan, as technology will save us. You can even leave out the part about buying a hybrid vehicle, as people just say they cannot afford one. None of this matters to the naysayers, as none of it is any concern to them. They just think that some magic pill will come along to save humanity, just as we all fall for every pharmaceutical ad on the TV telling us we need medicine for this, that and the other thing. Someone will save us, so why worry?

    • Damn the Torpedoes Again

      By Jayne Lyn Stahl

In her damn the torpedoes acceptance speech, at the Republican Convention last night, Sarah Palin, Alaska's governor, not only won her party's nomination, but she effectively auditioned for a remake of "Million Dollar Baby."

That said, the only reason for this dynamic duo is that both of their home states begin with the letter "A." While this may work for creationists, it doesn't cut it for those who'd like to believe we've made it out of the middle ages in one piece.

Among the governor's more memorable observations was that Barack Obama, at one time, was a community organizer. "Well," she said, "America is not a community, and we don't need an organizer."

Palin had a news flash for the American people. Well, we now have one for her: America may not be a "community," but it's not a congregation, either, and we, the people, won't allow ourselves to be steamrolled by a runaway executive branch again. We face record deficits, and moral bankruptcy, thanks to the Evangelistas of the 1990's, the Quayles, and Gingriches; the only ones who have benefited are the oil barons, and the credit card companies.

This country can no more afford someone within shooting range, or for that matter someone within shouting range, of the White House whose claim to fame is being able to gun down wildlife from 20,000 feet than we can afford to invite Edi Amin to a state dinner.

The folks who confuse shotgun weddings with shotgun diplomacy will put us one step closer to nuclear extinction whether they invoke the name of the almighty or not.

With McCain/Palin, the radical Christian right wing not only has traction, they have teeth.

    • The Little Things DO Matter, So Don’t Think Otherwise.

Oftentimes we hear reports about how changing a light bulb will not make a bit of a difference in the fight against climate change and that everyone must make huge sacrifices in order to have any effect. I say don’t listen to them! You should do what you can and what you feel comfortable with; if you feel fine moving into an earthship and living off the grid, then by all means please do! But if you only feel like you can change a light bulb and maybe buy organic bananas, then please…do that as well and do not feel guilty about it.

All the small acts by millions of people really do add up, and you have to keep that in mind as you do your little part.

All anyone can ask you to do is something small, as asking people to change their entire lifestyle, ride only their bikes, grow all their own food, install solar panels on everything, etc., will only serve to turn some people off from doing anything at all! Of course the more we all do the better off we will be, and doing more than the average person will benefit everyone in the long run. But while climate change is real and could be very, very bad for the human race, sometimes those of us involved in the movement forget that not everyone is willing to forgo some comforts to try to save the planet…myself included. Do I want every person on the planet to get onboard and do as much as they can? Of course. Do I think they will? Nope. So encouraging even the smallest changes from people is way more tactful than proclaiming them “enemies of the environment”. Don’t you think?

    • Citizens being randomly nabbed off the streets by Police in St Paul

At 4:00 with music playing at the rally at the Capitol a team of one to two dozen bike-mounted police officers swept in from clear across the capitol lawn directly up to two young people, a man and a woman, who were lounging in the grass, formed a circle around them and arrested them. According to Sgt. John Lazoya of the St. Paul Police Department, the young man was a suspect in the shattering of the Macy’s store window. Lazoya said police officers had been given information with details about the young man on fliers before the concert. When they circled the suspects, the growd gathered to hear the music surrounded the officers chanting “Let them go” and, as the pair were taken away in plastic handcuffs, “This is what a police state looks like.”

At 4:52, Lazoya approached in a vehicle with a PA system, announcing, “Your parade permit will expire at 5 pm… If you continue with your parade, you will be in violation of city ordinance CH366A.” As he pulled away, people were heard yelling, “They can’t hear you.”

Immediately the march began filing out as riot police took positions along the edge of the capitol building. The crowd chants, “What do we want? Troops out. When do we want it? Now!”

At 4:57, police are running to new positions as the march appears to be taking an unsanctioned route — directly down the capitol lawn. Police in riot gear are at the ready.

      Wow....this just blows my mind....

As I was watching McCain give his acceptance speech right now, I came across this story....I never knew this about McCain.
      Why hasn't this been news?

      As a
liberal filmmaker, and political as I am, even as a filmmaker, I didn't know this about McCain: There is a huge story about McCain's first wife he left behind; who became disabled from a car wreck when he was a POW, then when he came home, cheated on her and left her for Cindy.
      Here's the detailed news link:
