Nutraceuticals The new wave in health

  • Public Topic: Everyone is invited to contribute to Nutraceuticals The new wave in health

    • Homeopathic drugs: Look-alike medicines

Two over-the-counter products, Seasonal Allergy Relief and Intense Sinus Relief, both made by Zicam, promise to relieve hay-fever symptoms. Intense Sinus Relief contains oxymetazoline, a nasal decongestant the Food and Drug Administration has found to be safe and effective. The other Zicam product is homeopathic; it hasn't been reviewed by the FDA and its active ingredients, including sulphur, have been diluted almost to vanishing.

But despite this major difference between the two products, our 11 mystery shoppers, who visited 52 drugstores throughout the U.S., frequently found them alongside each other on drugstore shelves. So consumers might mistakenly buy a homeopathic remedy when they're really looking for conventional medicine. That wastes money and might lead to inadequate treatment.

Homeopathy is a centuries-old form of medicine in which a substance that could cause symptoms is diluted until it becomes virtually undetectable. For example, the "active" ingredients in the homeopathic flu remedy Oscillococcinum are wild duck heart and liver, apparently because those organs are said to contain tiny amounts of the flu virus. The ingredients are so diluted, there probably isn't one molecule of them per package. Yet homeopathy's supporters say that infinitesimal amount can improve health.

      Unproven results

There's little evidence to back up this notion, according to a 2005 meta-analysis in the Lancet of 110 placebo-controlled homeopathy trials matched with 110 trials of conventional drugs. A subset of large, high-quality studies showed that any benefit from homeopathic remedies was "compatible with" the effect of a placebo. An accompanying editorial said the findings were less surprising than the fact that debate over homeopathy continues, "despite 150 years of unfavorable findings."

The FDA is officially required to regulate homeopathic drugs, but a spokeswoman said the agency doesn't review those products and so does not approve them as safe and effective. That's partly because the items are so diluted that they're thought to pose little direct risk, she said.

      Confusion in the aisles

In addition to Zicam's hay-fever products, we found homeopathic yeast pills sold next to a similarly packaged, FDA-approved drug for urinary pain. Nature's Cure sells its homeopathic and conventional yeast-infection remedies as a "combination pack." Drugstore representatives we contacted said they display the remedies together because consumers shop for products based on symptoms. But Michael Cohen, president of the nonprofit Institute for Safe Medication Practices, says, "It's misleading and potentially harmful to merchandise homeopathic remedies alongside conventional drugs." Relying on a homeopathic yeast-infection remedy instead of an FDA-approved drug could allow the infection to get worse.

    • Nation's Top Psychiatrist Sees Brain Imaging As Future of Psychiatry

The following is a series of quotes about brain imaging from Thomas Insel, MD, PhD, Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, the country’s chief psychiatrist, from a keynote lecture at the American Psychiatric Association’s Annual Meeting in 2005 in Atlanta.

"Brain imaging in clinical practice is the next major advance in psychiatry."

"Trial and error diagnosis will move to an era where we understand the underlying biology of mental disorders."

"We are going to have to use neuroimaging to begin to identify the systems pathology that is distributed in each of these disorders and think of imaging as a biomarker for mental illnesses."

"The DSM-IV has 100%reliability and 0% validity. We need to develop biomarkers, including brain imaging, to develop the validity of these disorders."

"We need to develop treatments that go after the core pathology, understood by imaging."

"The end game is to get to an era of individualized care."

Dr. Insel believed in 2005 that brain imaging in clinical practice would be a reality in 5 years. Amen Clinics, Inc. (ACI) thinks that brain imaging in clinical practice is long overdue. You can try to kill yourself in virtually every major city in the world, and no one will look at your brain! ACI has been working hard to bring brain imaging to those in need. Over the past 16 years we have developed a database of nearly 40,000 brain SPECT scans. We have more experience in applying this technology than anyone in the world.

Please enjoy our website, and always work toward a brain healthy life.

It's the American thing to do!
      Homework: : )

Neil Young's song "Let's Impeach the President for Lying"
should be our chant until the Iraq Occupation for oil stops and GW Bush and his puppet master Dick Cheney's butts are out of our United States President's Oval Office. We should learn these lyrics (below) and march the streets like this great and inspiring protest march last summer in Kennebunkport, Maine.
      cg

I am going to record this song on my old cassette player now and try to get time to bring it down where people are already walking and jogging on our Baxter Boulevard in Portland.,... a few handouts of the lyrics and we have perpetual march..I personally might not have time though...I'll try to set it up and be there though tomorrow in Portland ME at Baxter Blv...if I can make it.

    • Home cooked pet diets for cats and dogs

For thousands of years the "art" of eating food to preserve health and prolong life was practiced in the Orient and in Ancient Greece. The consumption of food evolved beyond just eating for pleasure or survival, it became a treatment for imbalances in the body. The basis for health and happiness is the Chinese aphorism: "You become what you eat". I believe this is true for animals as well as humans.

Coreen and Neezer, Kauai Clients Animals come into our lives as gifts from God, for companionship, to teach us, and to heal us. They deserve our very best efforts in caring for them.

Vioxx was one of the most widely used prescription drugs in the world and, for many, it may have been a killer. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is supposed to guarantee the safety of the medicines we take, but some say it may have disregarded warnings from its own scientists about this looming public health disaster. NOW's BAD MEDICINE explores the drug approval process and talks with FDA whistleblower, Dr. David Graham, who reveals how his FDA managers tried to silence him and quash evidence that indicated Vioxx was unsafe.

    • Medical Marijuana & Health Care Economics

People have CB1 receptors in the brain. The body makes Anandamide to bond at CB1, and if you smoke marijuana that is where the THC likes to go.

Everybody needs Cannabinoids to be healthy. When your body does not produce sufficient cannabinoids, you need to supplement with medical marijuana to be healthy. When President Obama stops DEA raids on medical marijuana everything gets better: Health Care Costs, Medicare & Medicaid, PTSD Veterans, Auto Immune, Autism, ADHD & Chronic Pain Conditions. By encouraging scientific research, Obama will allow cannabis nutraceutical products to help everyone (when federal law allows), without the Pharmaceutical Industry or taxes or the VA.

This is ALL True. It is happening right now. Part of the solution to all these issues, exists in medical marijuana states. It is time to connect the dots of medical marijuana and the issues facing America today. We need to live, think & plan sustainably. We must create eco-friendly, economically sustainable solutions because Washington does not have any answers.

We are part of the solution. But we do not want to go to jail. We are not legalization activists, drug dealers or gang bangers; we are eco-entrepreneurs: aging baby-boomers, PTSD Vets, old hippies with advanced degrees and/or years in alternative health care. We are ‘out to save the world’; ‘what would Jesus do’ folks.

    • Days after his first dose of Prozac, Kurt shot and killed his father

"I didn't realize I did it until after it was done, and then I realized it. This might sound weird, but it felt like I had no control of what I was doing, like I was left there just holding a gun."
This is how Kurt Danysh described the moment he realized that he had shot and killed his father.
Kurt's story began 17 days earlier when he was prescribed the drug Prozac by a general practitioner (who failed to perform any psychological testing). Shortly after beginning to take his Prozac prescription, Kurt, a normally outgoing teenager, became withdrawn and moody. By the second week, he was restless and violent. He got into a fight with his best friend and purposely crashed his truck into a stone wall. This was, to say the least, out of character for Kurt.
Tragically, only seventeen days after his first dose of Prozac, Kurt shot and killed his father, the one person he loved most in this world. The shooting was a complete shock and made no sense to anyone who knew Kurt and his father.
It was clear that the Prozac had caused a drastic, violent change in Kurt. In spite of this fact, Eli Lilly & Co., the maker of Prozac, claimed that their drug would not cause aggressive behavior. As a result of this claim and regardless of the fact that Kurt had no history of violence prior to Prozac, he was convicted of murdering his father and sentenced to 22.5 to 60 years

I received an email from someone I know who said his wife used anti depressants and it saved her life. They are not all bad by any means..they understand that medication is over prescribed seriously in the USA. We don't want everyone to stop their meds just to be smarter than the Pharm COs.and research. They are not telling us both sides of the story.

    • Atlantic salmon returning to East Coast rivers anglers and conservationists rejoic...

Atlantic salmon returning to East Coast rivers
      July 23, 2008
CORNER BROOK, Newfoundland—The Atlantic Salmon Federation says rivers in eastern Canada have had some of the best wild Atlantic salmon returns in years.
With good water conditions and strong salmon runs throughout much of Atlantic Canada, Quebec and Maine, the group is reporting anglers and conservationists rejoicing from Labrador to Maine and all points in between.
Don Ivany, the regional director for Newfoundland and Labrador, says the returns of salmon are "a pleasant surprise," after the poor runs of 2007.
He says counting facilities indicate much better runs than previous averages dating back to 1984.
One of the more dramatic examples is the Exploits River in central Newfoundland at Bishops Falls.
To July 20, the river had a total return of 26,986 grilse and large salmon compared to an average of 15,770 in the period 1992 to 2007 and an average of 5,309 in the period 1984 to 1991.
The smaller salmon, grilse, that have spent only one year in the ocean are making the big difference. It is especially true in Newfoundland rivers where grilse make up most of the runs.
Since counting facilities are on only a portion of the hundreds of salmon rivers throughout eastern Canada and the New England states, the federation is cautious about declaring this a successful year.

I have had the profound experience of watching our Presumpscot River at the end of our street trnsform from a dead and poisonous sewer to a vibrant and healthy rapids with American Eagles and Osprey during the past years. They removed the damns because of economic reasons finally. I think we should apologize to the Natives who lived here and if i remember correctly walked to talk to our leaders in Boston to complain and got no respect.

But this is good news for the good guys!

According to the Center for Disease Control reports of the virus are up 230% in people ages 17 - 21. This increase is due to sharing cups while playing beer pong.

Scared of playing beer pong now? The CDC gives this great suggestion for safe ponging, “Flip cup is great because each individual has their own cup. If it’s absolutely necessary to play beer pong, use the waterfall method. Many young adults, when asked if they practice safe pong, responded that they rinse the ball after it bounces off the table.”

      original version follow link.)
      To prevent do the following:

Avoid foods rich in the amino acid arginine, which can activate the virus. These foods include chocolate, cola, beer, grain cereals, chicken soup, gelatin, seeds, nuts and peas.

Taking L-lysine (from the health food stores) can reduce the frequency of attacks of oral herpes in some people. Take 500-1,000 milligrams a day on an empty stomach at the first sign of a tingle in your lip.

At the first sign of a tingle in my lip I take a tablet of L Lysine.
I have used this for 25 years with 100% effectiveness.
Don't listen to the doctors who recommend drugs and appointments. Don't let drug companies and advertising fool you! They want your money and don't care about you.
I use L Lysine a few times a year with 100% effectiveness...combined with making sure that I stopped eating too much chocolate and nuts.. while the outbreak is occurring.

      PATIENT COMMENT #1.
One week ago I felt great! That's before I took my first and my last Boniva "once a month pill". Stomach pain began 2 days later and then within 4 days my whole skeletal system became effected. I am 57 and feel like I am 80+. I never have reactions to drugs and had not heard anything about this drug. Only knew Sally Field said she used it. It's horrible!!!! I hurt all over, can't breathe well, and walk like someone who's had surgery. It even hurts to sleep; joints hurt and they are so tender. Thought I might have to go to the emergency room last night. My chest and back hurt so badly; felt like I was getting pneumonia. I thought this was crazy, so I got on the computer to see if I could find more info about this drug. Found this forum. Only wish I had investigated before I took that first pill.

      PATIENT COMMENT #2...
Please do not take this med or let anyone you know take it. I'm not

      PATIENT COMMENT #3...
I have been sent to the emergency room (my cost $2000), and a huge amount of blood tests all showing I am as healthy as I can been. I just realized tonight all the symptoms I have been having are most of the ones mentioned here. I am never going to take this medication again...... LEAVE THIS ONE ALONE.

      PATIENT COMMENT #4.
I am writing this about my father a healthy, still working 73 year old up until he took his second dose of Boniva in August of 2005. He was in and out of the hospital and emergency rooms so many times I couldn't keep track. He had all kinds of tests and nothing showed up. He was on so much pain medication and nothing would help. He couldn't sleep, eat sit or lay. He was diagnosed with mutiple myloma late September. This was also the wrong diagnosis. He was then diagnosed with acute leukemia which is what he died from October 29, 2005. I don't know if the Boniva caused this or if it just brought this disease out. As I said my father was healthy and working before Boniva and he also had regular check ups. I have never seen anyone in such pain! I asked the doctors from the beginning if the Boniva could have caused this and they wouldn't even talk about it. No one can make me believe that Boniva didn't have something to do with my father's death.
