Gay Rights vs. Religious Freedom?

Today I got a new email from my friends at the American Family Association, titled “Gay rights trump religious freedom.” It’s about the idea that same-sex marriage and gay rights somehow curtail religious freedom. It first sites how the California Supreme Court ruled 7-0 that homosexual rights trump religious freedom, in a case involving Christian doctors who withheld “unnecessary” medical care from gays and lesbians.

In the case, a lesbian woman went to a Christian fertility clinic, and the doctors refused to artificially inseminate her, soley because she was a lesbian. She sued, and the Supreme Court ended up ruling in favor of her. The email repeatedly refers to her as “the lesbian,” in a similar context to how someone may say “the dog” or “the pig.” This is more evidence that they’re intolerant and homophobic.

To me, this isn’t curtailing religious freedoms in any way, it just means that doctors have to do their job, instead of trying to be all Evangelical. A major point is that the AFA is not for religious freedom, as much as it’s all for a Christian theocracy. For example, when Keith Ellison, the first Muslim senator in the US, was sworn in with a Koran, the AFA raised a huge stink. If they were for “religious freedom,” don’t you think they’d be all for that, cheering on Keith Ellison and his rights?

In general, Republicans aren’t the ones who are that big on freedom, nor are the Democrats, just to note. They don’t seem to understand what “religious freedom” is. They have religious freedom, we all do. I have the freedom to be a blasthemer and a heretic, while you all have the right to be Christian or Muslim or Hindu, and so on. What the AFA and other organizations wants is a Christian nation, where the 50 stars of the US flag are replaced by a cross, and our first amendment rights are curtailed in favor of a “moral” society. The AFA, if they ever get into power, would ban homosexuality, catapult women into the kitchen, and force everyone to dress “modestly.”

You won’t find any racial or homophobic epithets on their site. This doesn’t mean they aren’t homophobic and intolerant. Just go to their Wikipedia article, and you’ll see how many people they have boycotted and protested, simply because their opinions differ.

I really cannot wait for my next email! I hope it’s something good.

The cancer killing America

Personally, I would love to take all the Fundamentalists, Evangelicals, and Neo-Conservatives in America, such as Pat Robertson and Ann Coulter, pack them onto a plane, and send them off somewhere where they can have their own little nation, and never bother the intelligent Americans ever again. This would be a huge miscarriage of freedom and democracy though, and I actually respect their right to say what they want, because, frankly, without them, I would have nothing to blog about.

I recently made a blog about the American Family Association, known sometimes as the "American Fascism Association." They are one of many Neo-Con organizations that have a secret goal in mind: "take power in government, and force our will on society." I'm not saying that all Christians are bad - Evangelicals and Fundamentalists are the bad ones. They're highly intolerant and rude, as one can tell by listening to the rhetoric of Pat Robertson or Randall Terry.

The American Family Association has boycotted more companies than Theodore Kaczynski, the Family Research Council makes claims about the link between homosexuality and pedophilia, and Focus on the Family supports corporal punishment and school-sponsored prayer, as well as being opposed to "militant feminism." It's safe to say that these people are backward and closeminded, as well as being highly intolerant. As mentioned before, the AFA got all uppity about a Muslim senator swearing on the Koran. Really, how does that effect you or I? It doesn't. How would someone feel if they had to swear on a document or book which they disagree with? In court, I'd hypothetically throw a big fit if I had to swear on the Bible or something.

Nobody is trying to shove Islam down our throats, just like how nobody is trying to shove homosexuality down our throats (that sounded a bit sexually explicit). In America we have something called freedom of religion, but these groups like Focus on the Family want to end all that. Focus on the Family is against gambling, and all for banning even poker, although the Bible says nothing about gambling.

I think everyone is entitled to their beliefs, but it just really bothers me when people take their beliefs and try to push it on the populace, mostly when those beliefs are intolerant and misinformed, like the beliefs held by the creators of the American Family Association, and others.

What America needs is an organization that supports freedom and democracy with the same fervor the AFA has towards establishing America as a theocracy. We already have the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors organizations they see as potentially being racist, as well as TheocracyWatch, an organization that seems to monitor the organizations of the religious right. Both are very benign, so what we need is an organization that will go out and find religious-right protests, and counter protest, or make petitions that directly oppose the intentions of these organizations.

Another organization I forgot to mention is Phyllis Schlaffy's "Eagle Forum," which is very strongly anti-feminist. The organization was founded in the 1960s, and the president of the organization still happens to be Ms. Schlaffy. They successfully led the fight against the Equal Rights Amendment, sadly, which would have ended the legal prejudices against women. They support constitutional amendments, like the other organizations, to protect marriage and other "family values."

We, as freedom loving Americans, should do all we can to keep these fundies out of Washington D.C. Sure many of you may say that the Liberals want to impose their agenda on the people, but atleast our agenda is freedom, equality, and logic, and not intolerance and backwardness.
