We have been given a clear warning about the vice-presidential nominee for the Republican party. We already know she is a pathological liar. We already know she refuses even basic transparency and accountability, refusing to hold a press conference as veep nominee for the first time in modern American political history and refusing to provide even minimal documentation of her fifth pregnancy. Barely into her first year as governor, as one might expect of such a person, she abused her power as governor of Alaska to persecute a former family member:

Finding Number One

For the reasons explained in section IV of this report, I find that Governor Sarah Palin abused her power by violating Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act. Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) provides The legislature reaffirms that each public officer holds office as a public trust, and any effort to benefit a personal or financial interest through official action is a violation of that trust.

Finding Number Two

I find that, although Walt Monegan’s refusal to fire Trooper Michael Wooten was not the sole reason he was fired by Governor Sarah Palin, it was likely a contributing factor to his termination as Commissioner of Public Safety. In spite of that, Governor Palin’s firing of Commissioner Monegan was a proper and lawful exercise of her constitutional and statutory authority to hire and fire executive branch department heads.

Finding Number Three

Harbor Adjustment Service of Anchorage, and its owner Ms. Murleen Wilkes, handled Trooper Michael Wooten’s workers’ compensation claim property and in the normal course of business like any other claim processed by Harbor Adjustment Service and Ms. Wilkes. Further, Trooper Wooten received all the workers’ compensation benefits to which he was entitled.

Palin vs Spears Pregnancy: Why was it treated differently?

Lynne Spears is used to seeing her celebrity daughters, Britney and Jamie Lynn, at the center of media firestorms. But this week, Lynne was the one in the spotlight. She hit the talk-show circuit to promote her new memoir, "Through the Storm: A Real Story of Fame and Family in a Tabloid World" (Thomas Nelson). "This is the mother's version, not a tabloid version," Spears tells NEWSWEEK, by phone from her Louisiana home. "They report an incident, but don't tell you anything about it. You know that saying that a picture can say a thousand words? A picture can also tell a thousand lies."

As Spears waited for her 3-month-old granddaughter, Maddie, to arrive—she's on babysitting duty on a Friday afternoon to give new mom Jamie Lynn some downtime—the elder Spears spoke with NEWSWEEK's Sarah Kliff about a specific chapter in her book, and life: her daughter's teenage pregnancy, which the family announced last December on the cover of OK! Magazine. Jamie Lynn gave birth to Maddie in June; not long afterward, she granted OK! another exclusive with the first public photos of the baby. Her mother discussed the tabloid coverage, where the media went wrong and why Jamie Lynn's pregnancy was treated differently than that of Bristol Palin, the teenage daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. Excerpts:

NEWSWEEK: When Maddie was born, Jamie Lynn was on the cover of OK! magazine. The story got a lot of attention and some criticism. NEWSWEEK spoke to OK!'s editor about whether the piece glamorized teen pregnancy. W e received thousands of comments, with readers coming down on both sides. What do you think?
Lynne Spears: Do I promote teen sex? Of course not. Do I promote teen pregnancy? Needless to say, of course not. But when it happens, you deal with it and you do the best you can do. And you know what? She's doing pretty well. But [despite] a situation that has fallen in her lap, she's doing exceptionally well ... What kind of pictures would have been more befitting? Should she have just not done anything and let the paparazzi clamor around ... day and night?

Sometimes, when you're a celebrity, you have to choose the lesser of two evils. So she decided to do the OK! Magazine, give a spread, give some pictures, and it really did ease off the paparazzi. It has lightened up her load a lot ... Did it make it glamorous? It showed her with some cute little shots, having some fun moments with her little family. If they call it glamorous, well I'm sorry. But everybody knows that once you get a new baby, it's the most cherished time of your life—but it is not glamorous.

One of the critiques was that Jamie Lynn never talked about the difficult parts of being a parent, like waking up at 3 a.m. when your child starts crying. [The complaint was] she only ta lked about the good, fun parts.
Of course she knows it's going to be tough. You might lose sleep. Or maybe the baby's a little difficult to organize. Or maybe you don't get everything done that you want to do that day. You know what? Maybe the reporter didn't ask those questions, I don't know. But you know what really gets me? What would really blow them away?

We don't want this said, 'cause this would be glamorizing, but I will tell you a secret: her baby does sleep all night. What do you think about those apples? Maddie is the best baby I have ever seen. She is like a little angel. She's so contented. She laughs and she coos and ahead of herself with her stages. But of course we can't tell that because then we would just glamorize it more.

Palin Embarks On First VPILF Tour Of America

After a brief trip back to Alaska to prove her toughness with a wrestling match against a bear and a speech to the Wasilla PTA belittling “city folk who eat cheese and waste everyone’s time trying to organize things,” upstart Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin and her children are set to begin a bizarre cross country campaign trek billed as a combination of church revival, carnival sideshow and dysfunctional family sitcom.

McCain campaign sources have told CAP News that Palin has been asked to “dress down” for the trip to accenuate her relatively good looks and beauty pageant past.

“We are trying to get her in some warm-weather climates,” said a Republican operative. “Then give her a chance to maybe unbutton the top clasp on that blouse, let her hair down a bit, maybe whip off those glasses in a provactive way with a little soul/funk number playing in the background.

“We think it’s a winning strategy.”

The McCain campaign will also try to embrace the sticky subject of 17-year-old Bristol Palin’s unwed pregnancy with having the teenager perform a Karaoke serenade of Great Grandpapa Don’t Preach to the 72-year-old nominee during a video appearance.

“We’re hoping the ‘I’m keeping my baby!’ line will be a big applause-getter in the Heartland,” the GOP strategist gushed.

Republicans have been trying to term Bristol’s knocked-up revelation as a simple misunderstanding and a cute example of small-town life.

“When her mom was elected governor and she was told she’d be moving to Juneau she thought they wanted her to be More like Juno,” the strategist claimed. “But she’s getting married, so that should solve everything. I’m sure it will last.”

Bristol’s “fiance through acclimation” was less enthused about the attention. But Levi Johnson, who had a self-recorded version of Bristol’s Mom Has Got It Going On on his MySpace page taken down along with his assertion that he never wants to have kids, has reportedly taken solace in the idea that a Republican victory is “my ticket out of this iceberg town.”

Meanwhile, some rumors in the liberal blogsosphere persist about Bristol’s pregnancy, but have been wildly refuted.

“I’ve never even been to Alaska,” said a disheveled and disgraced former Democratic candidate John Edwards in a prepared statement.

Efforts to confirm the schedule were unsuccessful since, despite repeated requests from CAP News and other outlets, the McCain campaign said none of the Palins would be available for any interviews between now and Election Day.

McCain, Palin, and the meaning of "choice"

In the news release, the McCain campaign made sure to state that:

Bristol Palin made the decision on her own to keep the baby, McCain aides said.

While it's obvious why they made this statement to assure the public that Bristol was not coerced into keeping the baby (after all, she does have a parent who is a staunch opponent of the right to choose and is currently on the Republican presidential ticket), as my significant other pointed out, there's some serious hypocrisy at play here. I mean, John McCain and Sarah Palin don't believe women have a right to choose. It's absolutely absurd for the campaign to emphasize the fact that Bristol "made this decision," and then push for policies that take away that choice.

In reality, Bristol's actual "choice" was probably not whether to terminate the pregnancy or carry it to term, but whether raise the child herself or put it up for adoption. But the reason that the McCain campaign chose to emphasize Bristol's agency in this decision was to reassure the public that this pregnancy is not coercive. They know the public wants to feel secure in the knowledge that it was Bristol's choice to keep the pregnancy. And coming from the McCain campaign, which opposes a woman's right to choose, that statement is disgusting. As Kate Sheppard wrote in In These Times recently, during the 2000 primary McCain said that if his daughter got pregnant it would be a "family decision":

"The final decision would be made by Meghan with our advice and counsel," McCain said, referring to himself and his wife, Cindy. When reporters suggested that this view made him, in fact, pro-choice, McCain became irritated. "I don't think it is the pro-choice position to say that my daughter and my wife and I will discuss something that is a family matter that we have to decide."

In other words: My family and my daughter deserve a choice, but no other woman can be trusted with this decision. This fits nicely with the narrative on both Palin's decision to carry her Down's syndrome child to term and her daughter's decision to carry her own pregnancy to term. Their decisions are seen by the antichoice Republican base as affirmation that Palin shares their values.
