Mariana grew up in Portugal and moved to New York in August 2001 to study at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. A month later, she was reporting back to Europe on the events of 9/11. In 2003, Mariana moved to Damascus, Syria where she went undercover to report on Syrian mujahideen crossing into Iraq to fight against the US invasion.
