This Friday, June 19, Current will be observing Juneteenth, the commemoration of the end to slavery in the United States, as an official company-wide paid holiday.

At Current, our mission to improve financial outcomes for all Americans guides everything we do, and we’re dedicated to fighting the financial injustices that are part of the still many unseen aspects of inequality that still exist in this country. They have deep roots in many of our institutions, going back to the days before emancipation.

To this day, many African Americans still encounter these injustices:

-They are three times more likely to go unbanked

-Pay 50% more in bank fees than the national average

-It costs 30% more to maintain a checking account in African American neighborhoods

We believe this is an important time to reflect on not only the injustices that have existed in our country’s past, but also recognize there is still much work to be done in bringing an end to racial inequality, and it’s why we work towards our mission every day.
